
Ferris State Volleyball Weekly NewsSept. 15, 2000FSU Volleyball In Review - Ferris State University posted the school's best-ever start at 9-0 with a 3-0 win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Friday (Sept. 8) at the Fairview Inn Classic in Midland, Mich. On Saturday (Sept. 9), the Bulldogs defeated Bellarmine (Ky.) in three sets before losing a 3-2 heartbreaker to NCAA Division II No. 3 Northern Kentucky. The tournament was hosted by Northwood University. Ferris State is now 10-1. Other teams participating in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) battle included Northwood, Grand Valley State, Northern Michigan and Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne. This Week - For the first time in three weeks, the Bulldogs will be back at home inside the friendly confines of Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids. Ferris State will open GLIAC action on Friday (Sept. 15) at 7 p.m. against Northern Michigan. On Saturday (Sept. 16), the Bulldogs will host Michigan Tech at 4 p.m. FSU will complete its weekend home stand on Sunday (Sept. 17) at 1 p.m. when the Lakers of Lake Superior State come to town. Heading into the 2000 campaign, the Bulldogs held an all-time mark at Ewigleben Sports Arena of 182-50. Earlier this season, Ferris State finished 4-0 in its own invitational at home. In that invitational, Lake Superior State was the only team to win a game against the Bulldogs. VanderMolen Over Mark - Senior Sarah VanderMolen posted 20 kills against Northern Kentucky in a triple-double performance to become the 10th player in Ferris State volleyball history to record 1,000 career kills. She is 10th on the list with 1,015 kills. Against the Norse, she also had 14 digs and 13 blocks in a five-game match. Teammate Morgan Buckner currently stands seventh on the career chart with 1,222 kills. She needs just 18 kills to move into sixth place on the all-time list. Last season, she became the ninth player in school history to surpass the 1,000 kill mark. Former Ferris State All-American Patty Thies holds the school mark for career kills at 2,134. Conference Player of the Week - Senior middle hitter Sarah VanderMolen is this week's GLIAC Volleyball Player of the Week. The All-American candidate led FSU with 44 kills, 35 digs and 19 blocks during the week. For the season, she leads Ferris State in kills and digs. She also ranks second in service aces for the Bulldogs. Strong Net Play - The 20 total blocks recorded by sophomore Alaina Olds against Northern Kentucky is the second-best single match performance at the net in school history. Former All-American Patty Thies posted the school record with 21 total blocks against Grand Valley State on November 11, 1985. Olds had 18 block assists and 2 solo blocks as Ferris State tallied 44 blocks overall. Her previous best had been nine blocks against Northern Michigan last season. VanderMolen added 13 blocks against the Norse which is tied for the seventh-best total block performance. As a team, Ferris State recorded 47 blocks. That is the third-best all-time performance in a single match. At Home Again - Ferris State will remain at home next weekend as they continue conference action against Mercyhurst (Pa.) and Gannon (Pa). The Bulldogs will open the weekend against Mercyhurst on Friday (Sept. 22) at 7 p.m. at Ewigleben Sports Arena. Gannon will visit Big Rapids on Saturday (Sept. 23) for a 4 p.m. match. After these two match-ups, Ferris State will have just three home matches remaining. Squad Getting Points - In the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association weekly poll (AVCA), which was released today (Sept. 12), Ferris State received 16 points to rank second among those receiving votes. Cameron (Okla.) was the No. 25 team with 46 points. Northern Kentucky fell to No. 12. |
