FSU VOLLEYBALL SUFFERS SWEEP IN SEASON HOME FINALE MATCH

The final 2008 home match for the Ferris State women's volleyball team Saturday (Nov. 1) was decided in three sets as Saginaw Valley State handed the Bulldogs a 3-0 loss (27-25, 25-17, 26-24) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match play at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
The setback drops Ferris State to 16-10 overall and 8-6 in the conference this season to date. Prior to the match, the Bulldogs recognized their two senior student-athletes in Candice Marut (Pinconning) and Andrea Rich (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) in a special ceremony.
The first set was close all of the way as evident by five ties and two lead changes. FSU, which posted a .128 hitting percentage to the Cardinals' .089 attack percentage, led 22-19 at one point. However, SVSU would rally to tie the set at 25-all and then recorded a pair of kills to win the first set.
The second set was controlled by Saginaw Valley State as the Cardinals compiled a .282 percentage and held the Bulldogs to a -.023 hitting clip.
In the third and final set, SVSU would break a 24-apiece deadlock with back-to-back kills by Annie Buxton. The set had nine ties with four lead changes.
Junior middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist's (Macomb/Anchor Bay) nine kills led Ferris State, which hit at a .054 clip for the match. Sophomore middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) contributed seven kills. Setter Candice Marut posted 14 assists and Andrea Rich contributed 11 helpers.
In digs, the Bulldogs had four players with double-digit totals. Redshirt freshman libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) claimed a team-high 16 digs while sophomore defensive specialist Dana Ruttle (Reed City) had 12, Rich notched 11, and freshman outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) finished with 10 digs.
For the Cardinals, Annie Buxton's 13 kills represented a match high. Carmen Schacher was tops among all players with 19 digs as SVSU registered a .169 hitting percentage and also claimed 7.0 team blocks.
The Bulldogs are now 4-2 in their last six regular-season home match finales and the loss to the Cardinals snapped a three-match winning string in such matches.
