FSU VOLLEYBALL ANNOUNCES THE SIGNING OF KAREN THOMPSON
Brandel-Wilhelm Continues To Assemble A Group Of Talented Newcomers
Ferris State University women's volleyball head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm announced the signing of Karen Thompson (Holt) to the Bulldogs' 2008 recruiting class.
Thompson, a two-time all-state and three-time all-conference selection, will attend and become a member of the Ferris State women's volleyball team in the fall of 2008.
"Karen is a great competitor and we're certainly elated she will be a Bulldog," said Brandel-Wihelm, who finished her 12th year at Ferris State this 2007 campaign. "She sets a high standard for herself and her teammates as well. Karen is a strong all-around player who will contend for playing time early in her career."
The 2007 Lansing State Journal Player of the Year will come to FSU from Holt (Mich.) High School where she helped her team to a conference championship title this season for the first time in 26 years. The 2007 team Most Valuable Player Award recipient chalked up 528 kills to go with 117 service aces, 31 block solos, 40 block assists, and 541 digs during her senior season while playing for head coach Stephen May. She compiled season totals of 547 kills, 135 aces, 22 block solos, 45 block assists and 493 digs as a junior while leading the Rams to a 40-19-0 overall record. Thompson produced 348 kills, 82 service aces, 17 block solos, 18 block assists, and had 251 digs during her sophomore year as Holt went 35-18-4 overall for the 2005-06 season.
Thompson, a 5-10 outside hitter, has earned all-region honors in each of her final two prep campaigns and is a four-time all-academic team selection. The two-time team captain was recognized as the Lansing State Journal's Athlete of the Week in 2006.
In club volleyball, Thompson has played for the Michigan Junior Nationals coached by Ed Tolentino and also has participated with various teams in the Lansing Area Volleyball Association (LAVA). She also competed in varsity tennis at HHS in the fall of 2006 after spending the previous year on the junior varsity squad.
The daughter of Mike and Janet Thompson of Holt, Mich., Karen is interested in studying applied biology and pre-physical therapy at Ferris State.
The addition of Thompson brings the current Ferris State 2008 recruiting class to five as Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt), Mallory Kopa (Marysville), Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood), and Anne Sutton (Grand Rapids/Northview) all inked with the Bulldogs during the early-signing period.
