A pair of Ferris State University women's volleyball seniors, outside hitter Danielle Baucher (Kalamazoo/Mattawan) and middle hitter Karla White (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay), have both been honored as 2006 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Great Lakes Region First Team selections in an announcement made Wednesday (Nov. 15).

The duo were among 12 players named to the All-Great Lakes Region First Team. Six other playes were chosen as honorable mention selections this campaign. Last season, Baucher was a AVCA Honorable Mention All-Region pick. As first team recipients this season, both individuals are now included among the possible candidates for the 2006 AVCA All-America Teams, which will be announced later this month.

Ferris was one of only four regional programs to have two or more first team honorees this year. Great Lakes Regional Champion Ashland led the way with three first-team picks while FSU, Grand Valley State and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville all had two individuals on the squad. AVCA member head coaches nominate and choose their respective all-region players through a committee process.

The 5-10 Baucher, who was an All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First Team honoree this campaign, concluded her Bulldog career with a school-record 1,559 career digs along with 1,492 kills, which presently ranks sixth on the school’s career kills leaders list. Baucher, who ranked as Ferris' overall kills (4.45 kpg) leader this season along with second in digs (3.41 dpg), became the 14th player in school history to notch 1,000 career kills and only the sixth Bulldog player ever to record both 1,000 career kills and digs in Ferris’ season-opening home win over St. Joseph’s (Aug. 24). She was four service aces away from matching Kathy O’Connor’s (1990-93) fifth-place career mark of 171 aces at FSU.

A team captain, Baucher ranked among the GLIAC's overall leaders in kills, points and service aces this season. She picked up all-conference first team recognition for the second straight season while twice being named GLIAC North Division Player of the Week this campaign. Baucher tallied 10 kills or more in 27 of her 30 outings this season and reached double-figures in digs 23 times. Earlier this year, she was named to the Ferris State Invitational All-Tournament Team. Recently (Nov. 6), Baucher also claimed Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region First Team accolades in voting by the region's sports information directors.

White ranked among the league's overall blocks leaders this season as she has posted a team-best 127 total blocks with 22 solo efforts and 105 assists. In addition, the 6-0 middle hitter ranked second among the squad's overall leaders with 357 kills. The 2004 GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree concluded her career with 942 kills, 381 total blocks and 142 digs while being named to the All-GLIAC First Team for the second-straight season.

As a senior, White tallied GLIAC North Division Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career after leading FSU to a perfect 4-0 record in the Alamo City Classic (Sept. 1-2) held in San Antonio, Texas. Last season (2005), White led the Bulldogs in total blocks (121) and finished fourth among the squad's leaders in kills (267) while starting 29 of 32 outings. She compiled 263 kills, 112 total blocks and 14 service aces in 30 matches in 2004 as the Bulldogs claimed their ninth GLIAC Championship. White was also a co-recipient of Ferris State's 2004 Coaches Award.

Ferris State wrapped up the 2006 campaign with a 21-9 overall mark and made the program's 14th all-time NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance under head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm. FSU posted a second-place 12-6 record in GLIAC North Division action this campaign. The squad's 21 wins this campaign represented the eighth time in the last nine years the Bulldogs have notched 20 or more victories.

Ferris recorded the program's ninth consecutive winning campaign this year and the 2006 season marked the 26th-straight year the Bulldogs have reached double-figures in victories. The Bulldogs also advanced to the GLIAC Tournament for the ninth year in a row this campaign.
