FERRIS TRACK ATHLETES TO COMPETE IN GLIAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Several Bulldogs Ranked Among League Leaders Entering Outdoor Meet This Week

GLIAC Championships A number of Ferris State University student-athletes are among the competitors to watch at this week's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will take place Thursday and Friday (April 30-May 1) at Hillsdale College's Ken Herrick Track in Hillsdale, Mich.

Action in the conference meet starts on Thursday at 3 p.m. (EDT) and runs throughout the evening. Friday's (May 1) competition will begin at 11 a.m. (EDT) and conclude during the late afternoon hours.

In the women's competition, the Bulldogs own the top league performances this season in two events. Senior Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel) ranks first in the 1,500 meters (4:26.53) and sophomore Tina Muir (St. Albans, U.K.) is first in the 5,000 meters (16:55.22). Muir's time is the top performance in her event in school history while Stuart's clocking in the 1,500 meters ranks second all-time on FSU's outdoor charts.

Senior Krystle Wilson (Detroit/Trinity Catholic) is included near the top of the GLIAC Performance listing in both the 200 meters (25.44) and the 400 meters (58.41) where she sits third and fourth, respectively, heading into the conference championships. Sophomore Paige Onweller (Lapeer/East) is ranked fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:37.41) while junior Emily Cross (Riley/Armada) is seventh in the high jump (5-3).

The Bulldog men have four individuals ranked among the GLIAC's top eight performers heading into Thursday's competition. Junior Matt Jozwiak (Berkley) tops the GLIAC in the 800 meters (1:51.53) after breaking Ferris' oldest school track and field record with his league-leading time recently at the Northwood Open (April 18) in Midland, Mich. The time broke the previous Bulldog outdoor best of 1:51.94 set by Ron Ward in 1964.

In addition to Jozwiak, senior Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) is ranked fourth in the 5,000 meters (15:07.49) and junior Greg Burns (Litchfield) is fifth in the pole vault (15-11). Meanwhile, sophomore Paul Stergiadis (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) is listed eighth in the javelin (155-3).

This week's conference meet will give individuals another chance to reach national qualification marks for the NCAA-II Outdoor Track and Field Championships slated for May 21-23 in San Angelo, Texas.

FSU currently has five national qualifiers this season in Stuart (800, 1500), Muir (1500, 5000), Onweller (1500), Jozwiak (800) and Burns (pole vault). Stuart is an automatic qualifier in the 1,500 meters and Muir has automatically qualified in the 5,000 meters while the others are national provisional qualification marks.
