
1998 Ferris Men's Tennis Notebag
July 31
Bulldog head coach Mike Haber has left Ferris to accept a position as assistant
coach for the University of Wisconsin's women's tennis program. Haber leaves
Ferris after guiding the 1997-98 Bulldogs to an NCAA Division II Midwest
Regional appearance and a No. 11 Midwest Regionall ranking. As a player
at Ferris from 1991-93, Haber was a two-time GLIAC champion at No. 1 singles
and doubles and qualified for the NCAA II Championships while being nationally
ranked in his three seasons of action.
May 19
The Bulldogs placed 11th in the 1998 NCAA Division II Midwest Region final
rankings. Individually, freshman Martin Krbec was ranked ninth among
the region's top singles players. In doubles, Krbec and sophomore Matt
Vredenberg were ranked sixth in the region, while sophomore Pat
Fisher and senior Jared Shapiro were 14th.
May 4
Freshman Martin Krbec posted the Bulldogs' lone triumph in singles
action versus Southwest Baptist (Mo.) at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional
Championships. Krbec won in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) at No. 1 singles and
finished the season with a team-leading 29-9 singles record. . .The Bulldogs
were 144-79 in overall singles competition this season and 74-70 in doubles.
. .Sophomore Pat Fisher and senior Jared Shapiro claimed
FSU's other victory against Southwest Baptist at No. 2 doubles, 8-6. Fisher
and Shapiro completed the season with a team-best 26-11 doubles record.
April 27
Freshman Martin Krbec defeated defending GLIAC champion Marek Kolar
of Northwood at the GLIAC Tournament, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Kolar was named the
GLIAC's 1998 "Player of the Year" by the conference's head coach. Krbec's
victory gave him the No. 1 singles crown in the GLIAC for 1998.
April 20
The Bulldogs are ranked 7th in the latest NCAA Division II Midwest Region
rankings.
April 13
The Bulldogs have won 13 of their last 14 matches and have a current 5-match
winning streak. . .FSU has registered a 48-6 singles record and a 24-3
doubles mark in conference match play this season. . .Ferris finished undefeated
at home this season at 8-0 (10-0 including exhibitions) and is 45-3 in
home matches dating back to 1992. Freshman Calvin LaForrest has
compiled an 18-8 record in singles competition, second-best on the squad.
He is 15-4 at the number five flight.
April 6
The Bulldogs have won 10 of their last 11 matches, including a two-match
winning streak. Ferris is 98-54 in overall singles competition this season
and 54-24 in doubles. In the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference,
Ferris is 36-6 in singles and 18-3 in doubles. The Bulldogs are eighth
in the lastest NCAA Division II Midwest Regional rankings. . .FSU sports
a 43-3 record in home matches dating back to the 1992 season (including
exhibitions). The Bulldogs, 8-0 at home this season, went undefeated at
home in 1992 (4-0), 1993 (5-0) and 1995 (8-0). . .Freshman Martin Krbec
has posted a team-best 19-7 singles record, all at the number one flight.
Sophomore Pat Fisher and senior Jared Shapiro have combined
for a team-leading 19-6 doubles record, including an 18-6 mark at the number
two flight.
March 22
The Bulldogs have a current eight-match winning streak. . .FSU is presently
86-48 in singles competition this season and 48-21 in doubles action. .
.Freshman Martin Krbec has a team-leading 17-6 singles record, all
at the number one flight. . .In doubles play, sophomore Pat Fisher
and senior Jared Shapiro have combined for a team-best 17-5 record,
including 16 wins at number two doubles.
