Ferris State Defeats Wayne State To Claim Great Lakes Regional Title
Ferris State advanced to the NCAA Division II Championship round for the fourth consecutive season with a 5-2 win over Wayne State Saturday (May 3) in the Great Lakes Regional title match held at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.
The Bulldogs, who improved to 18-7 overall, won two of three doubles encounters and sealed the match with victories at the numbers two, four and five singles flights. The Warriors concluded the 2002-03 campaign with a 26-9 overall record after falling to FSU in the regional final for the second-straight year.
Ferris State, which is ranked 26th in the latest (April 25) Omni Hotels/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National poll, posted a 5-0 opening-round win Friday (May 2) versus Shepherd (W.Va.) to reach the final under first-year head coach Kevin Brandalik. WSU, which is ranked 33rd nationally and dropped a 5-3 decision to the Bulldogs in last season's regional title match held in Big Rapids, advanced to the finals by virtue of its 5-0 opening-round win versus Missouri-St. Louis on Friday.
The Bulldogs, who clinched their seventh overall berth in the national finals round, will take part in the 16-team single elimination national championship field slated for May 8-11 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Ferris will face Central Regional champion and third-ranked Drury (Mo.) Thursday, May 8, at 10:30 a.m. (EDT). Last season (2002), FSU lost a 5-0 match to North Florida (May 9) in the round of 16.
