Oct. 19: Ferris State's Jan Talian Finishes Seventh In Singles Field

Ferris State senior men's tennis player Jan Talian finished seventh overall in the Division II singles field at the 2002 Omni Hotels National Small College Championships with a victory on Saturday at the H.E. Butts Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Talian defeated Assumption's Sean Kenney 6-2, 6-1 in the seventh place singles contest. On Friday, Southwest Baptist's Andras Bori and Mark Eori captured the Division II men's doubles title Friday, beating FSU's Jason Cole and Talian in the final match, 8-2. Talian was looking for his second title at this event - he won the men's doubles crown as a freshman in 1999.

This event determines national champions for NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges men's and women's singles and doubles during the first three days of play. Those champions then compete to become the overall national small college champs (for all divisions) on Sunday in the Omni Hotels "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis. This tournament is the only national championship event for singles and doubles at the NCAA Division II and NAIA level, and the only tournament that combines all levels of Junior/Community College (NJCAA Divisions I, II and III and the California schools).

Each small college division features eight singles players and eight doubles teams who earned spots into this national event by winning their respective Omni Hotels Regional Championships held over the past three weeks throughout the country (as well as some "at-large" selections).

This event is presented by the U.S. Tennis Association and administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The overall Omni Hotels "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis champions on Sunday will earn wild cards into the Nov. 7-10 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, hosted by Southern Methodist University at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas. This tournament is the second of three national championships for Division I tennis and offers the small college participants the opportunity to become champions for all divisions of collegiate tennis.

Oct. 18: Ferris Duo Falls In Division II National Doubles Final

Southwest Baptist's Andras Bori and Mark Eori captured the Division II men's doubles title Friday, beating Ferris State's Jason Cole and Jan Talian at the 2002 Omni Hotels National Small College Tennis Championships at the H.E. Butts Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Bori and Eori won today's final 8-2. Talian was looking for his second title at this event - he won the men's doubles crown as a freshman in 1999. The final finish probably secures a No. 2 Omni Hotels national doubles ranking later this fall for the FSU duo.

In singles action, Talian lost in today's consolation semis, 5-7, 6-0, 6-0 against Lees-McRae's Jaco Kruger. He'll play for seventh place tomorrow (Oct. 19) against Assumption's (Mass.) Sean Kenney.

Oct. 17: FSU Duo Advances To Doubles Final At Small College Championships

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Ferris State's Jason Cole and Jan Talian picked up two wins today to advance to Friday's Division II men's doubles final at the Omni Hotels National Small College Tennis Championships at the H.E.B. Tennis Center.

Cole and Talian upset top seeds Jan Krejci and Peter Madarassy of BYU-Hawaii 8-3 in this afternoon's semifinals. They opened the day with an 8-5 opening round win over Drury's (Mo.) Hicham Fathi and Jeremy Blandin.

Talian, who won the 1999 doubles title with Martin Krbec as a freshman, and Cole will face Southwest Baptist's (Mo.) Mark Eori and Andras Bori in Friday's 2 p.m. CT final. Should they win that match they would advance to the Omni Hotels "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis this weekend where they would play the champs from the other divisions.

In singles action, Talian fell to Bori in the opening round by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and will face Jaco Kruger of Lees-McRae in Friday morning's consolation semifinals at 10 a.m. (EDT).

This event determines national champions for NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges men's and women's singles and doubles during the first three days of play.
