FERRIS MEN'S TENNIS RECEIVES NCAA-II NATIONAL TOURNEY BID
Bulldog Menís Team To Hit Road For Regional Play
The Ferris State University men's tennis team has been selected to participate in the 2008 NCAA Division II Championships. The 64 selected teams along with the 16 first and second-round regional sites were announced late last week by the NCAA-II Men's and Women's Tennis Committee.
Each of the following eight regions will conduct two first and second-round regional tournaments: East, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, South, Great Lakes, Central, North Central and West. Both the Northwood and Drury (Mo.) men's teams were selected to host Great Lakes Regional play. Sixteen men's and women's regional tournaments will be held with the winner of each advancing into the 16-team single-elimination national championship field slated for May 14-17 in Houston, Texas.
The Bulldog men's tennis team will compete in one of two NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournaments this Thursday and Friday, May 8-9, at Northwood University in Midland, Mich. FSU will square off against West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) opponent West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday (May 8) at 3 p.m. (EDT). The other first-round match in the Northwood regional pits Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) member Rockhurst (Mo.) against the host Timberwolves starting at 1 p.m. (EDT) with the winners slated to meet Friday (May 9) in the final at 12 p.m. (EDT).
All matches in the Northwood regional are slated to be held outside on-campus at NU's Gerstacker Tennis Center. The Midland Community Tennis Center will be used in the event of rain or inclement weather.
The selections of teams for the championship was based on prescribed criteria listed in the NCAA-II Men's and Women's Tennis Championships Handbook and approved by the NCAA-II Championships Committee.
The Ferris State men's team, presently 10-10 overall, will be making its 11th consecutive and 14th overall NCAA-II Regional Tournament appearance. Last season (2007), FSU defeated Grand Valley State 5-3 in the regional first round (5/3) before falling to host Northwood in the regional final (5/4) for the second-straight year at Midland, Mich. Ferris claimed its sixth consecutive regional title and ninth overall berth in the national finals round three years ago (2005) where FSU fell to West Florida (5/11) by a 5-1 count in the round of 16 at Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Ferris State placed fourth overall at the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Tennis Tournament under first-year head coach Alex Palladino two weeks ago (April 19-20) at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
