The Ferris State University softball team has placed 38th among the nation's Division II teams in grade-point average for the 2005-06 academic year as released recently by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

The Bulldogs, under the direction of ninth-year head coach Keri Becker, registered a 3.205 gpa for 2005-06 while Grand Canyon University (Ariz.) claimed top honors with a 3.604 team gpa. Emporia (Kan.) State University finished second place at 3.540 and Missouri Western State College garnered third place after compiling a 3.490 team gpa.

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) featured four representatives -- Findlay (14th - 3.397 gpa), Saginaw Valley State (21st - 3.314 gpa), Grand Valley State (30th - 3.258 gpa), and Ferris State (38th - 3.205 gpa) among the 56 recognized teams.

The selection of the NFCA All-Academic teams is based upon cumulative grade point averages (GPA) submitted by NFCA-member head coaches for the 2005-06 academic year. Along with the teams, the NFCA recognized over 2,700 scholar-athletes who registered better than 3.5 GPAs last year. The NFCA is the professional growth organization for fastpitch softball coaches from all competitive levels of play.

Ferris State placed seven individuals on the 2006 GLIAC Softball All-Academic Team as Megan Brink (Vicksburg), Laura Crower (Midland), Kristin Hollister (Newport/Airport), Jessica Jaroniewski (Millington), Katie Kraai (Zeeland), Carissa Quider (Gladwin/Pinconning), and Lindsay Riskovitch (Reese) were all honored by the conference for their academic productivity.

The Bulldogs, who compiled a 26-26-0 overall record in 2006, will open their 2007 season March 3-10 at the annual Florida Rebel Spring Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.
