FERRIS STATE WOMEN’S SOCCER ADDS WILLIAMSTON MIDFIELDER
Michelle Young Announces Intentions To Attend & Compete For The Bulldogs
Third-year Ferris State University women’s soccer head coach Melissa Lalonde has announced the addition of prep midfielder Michelle Young (Williamston), who has committed to attend and play soccer at FSU beginning with the 2005-06 academic year.
The 5-4 Young, who’s currently playing her prep senior season this spring, earned third-team all-state recognition as a junior in 2004 after guiding Williamston High School to a 20-4-2 overall record and a second consecutive district championship. She registered seven goals and 11 assists under head coach Jim Flore last campaign.
“I'm pleased Michelle’s elected to join our program,” Lalonde said. “She’s done a great job as a midfielder at the high school level for several years. Williamston has played a tough schedule each year and therefore she’s used to a competitive environment.”
A four-year letterwinner, Young attained All-Capital Area Activities Conference kudos for the second-straight year last season. The two-time (2003-04) all-district honoree also was named to the all-region squad. In addition, she helped WHS achieve team academic all-state recognition by being chosen as an all-academic team pick for the second consecutive campaign.
“Overall, she’s a hard-worker with a great fitness base, solid touch and the ability to read plays nicely,” said Lalonde. “Her base of skill and instinct will give her a good foundation to make a successful jump to the college level.”
Young, who twice (2003-04) served as team captain, totaled 10 goals and three assists as a sophomore (2003) following her eight goals along with four assist output in her freshman campaign (2002). Her play helped Williamston compile records of 13-9-3 and 16-7-2 in 2002 and 2003, respectively. She also played club level soccer for both the TNT and C.A. United Soccer Teams.
Besides soccer, Young also participated in volleyball and cross country during her prep career. She netted honorable mention all-league cross country kudos in 2002 and advanced to the state finals in 2001. She was also active in the National Honor Society, Young Life and Peers programs along with being named homecoming queen. The daughter of William and Lynn Young of Williamston, Michelle plans to major in dental hygiene at Ferris State.
Young is the latest addition to FSU’s 2005 recruiting class, which also includes midfielders Jackie Back (Ortonville/Brandon) and Stacey Daschner (Rockford), forward Tammy Unsworth (White Lake/Walled Lake Northern), goalkeeper Sarah Crumback (Battle Creek/Lakeview) along with defender Amanda Mills (Rockford).
The Bulldogs recorded the program's second-best performance in its five-year history with a 9-9-1 overall mark under Lalonde in 2004, including a fifth place 3-5 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) finish.
