Aug. 29, 2005
Senior forward Lindsey Pawloski (Royal Oak/Kimball) netted two goals, including the game winner 7:51 into overtime as the Ferris State women's soccer team defeated Quincy (Ill.) 2-1 Sunday (Aug. 28) in the Grand Valley State Tournament at Allendale, Mich. Ferris dropped a 2-1 decision to Southern Indiana Friday (Aug. 26) in its season opener at the GVSU Tournament.
The Bulldogs return 10 starters and 14 letterwinners from a season ago, including a 2004 All-GLIAC Second Team honoree in Lindsey Pawloski. Pawloski currently ranks third on the school's all-time points leaders list with 42 (17-8--42) career points.
Senior forward Lisa O'Brian (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) presently ranks as FSU's second all-time leading scorer and goal producer with 58 points and 24 markers. O'Brian's 10 career assists currently ranks third on the school's all-time list. She scored FSU's only goal versus Southern Indiana.
Junior goalkeeper Carla Gilbertson's (Waunakee, Wis.) six shutouts last campaign ranked first on the school's single-season leaders chart. She needs three more shutouts to match Connie Bigott's (2000-01) school-record career total of nine shutouts.
Ferris State will host seven home contests this campaign at the FSU Varsity Soccer Field. The Bulldogs' first home encounter is a non-conference outing against Missouri-St. Louis Friday, Sept. 2, at 4 p.m. (EDT). FSU will then host non-league opponent Rockhurst (Mo.) Sunday, Sept. 4, at 12 p.m. (EDT) before squaring off against Albion Tuesday, Sept. 6, in a 4:30 p.m. (EDT) non-conference home contest.
Head coach Melissa Lalonde is in her third season at the Bulldog helm and holds a 21-14-2 (.595) coaching mark at Ferris State. Lalonde presently is two victories shy of tying Pete Watkins (1999-02) for the most victories in school history. Watkins, who served as Ferris' first-ever head coach, compiled a 23-36-7 (.402) mark in four seasons.
The Bulldogs have never faced either Albion or Rockhurst heading into this weekend. FSU is 1-2 all-time versus Missouri-St. Louis and won the most recent meeting 3-2 (9/1/03) in Bourbonnais, Ill.
Missouri-St. Louis is currently 1-1 overall this campaign following Sunday's (Aug. 28) 1-0 triumph over Missouri Southern at home. UMSL dropped a 2-1 decision to Ashland in Friday's (Aug. 26) season opener in St. Louis, Mo. Ninth-year head coach Beth Goetz guided the Riverwomen to a 9-9-1 overall mark last campaign.
Rockhurst will open the 2005 campaign Wednesday (Aug. 31) at Washburn (Kan.). The Hawks will then visit Saginaw Valley State Saturday (Sept. 3) prior to meeting the Bulldogs. Rockhurst defeated Baker (Kan.) 3-1 in a home exhibition contest on Aug. 20. Head coach Greg Herdlick has directed the Hawks to 60 wins in six seasons, including an 8-4-3 finish last season.
Albion will host Buffalo State (N.Y.) in its season opener Friday (Sept. 2) before heading to Big Rapids. The Britons compiled a 10-8-2 record overall in 2004 under head coach Lisa Roschek, including a third place 10-4-2 mark in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.
FSU's 2005 squad features four of the program's top five career scoring leaders in Lisa O'Brian (2nd-58 points), Lindsey Pawloski (3rd-42), senior midfielder Andrea Moma (Middleville/Wayland Union) (4th-33) and senior forward Jen Gaylor (Roscommon) (5th-27).
Carla Gilbertson had a personal career-high 13 saves versus Southern Indiana, which tied for the program's fifth-best mark in a single contest.
The Bulldogs concluded the 2004 women's soccer campaign with an 9-9-1 overall mark under head coach Melissa Lalonde, which represented the program's second-best performance in its five-year history and included a fifth place 3-5 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) finish. FSU won six of its final 11 outings last campaign.
