Ferris State Women's Soccer Notes
Aug. 24, 2005
The Ferris State University women's soccer team will open the 2005 campaign against Southern Indiana this Friday (Aug. 26) in a neutral site non-league match at Allendale, Mich. The contest, which is part of the Grand Valley State Tournament, begins at 2 p.m. (EDT).
The Bulldogs concluded the 2004 women's soccer campaign with an 9-9-1 overall mark under head coach Melissa Lalonde, which represented the program's second-best performance in its five-year history and included a fifth place 3-5 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) finish. FSU won six of its final 11 outings last campaign.
The Bulldogs return 10 starters and 14 letterwinners from a season ago, including a 2004 All-GLIAC Second Team honoree in senior forward Lindsey Pawloski (Royal Oak/Kimball). Pawloski currently ranks third on the school's all-time points leaders list with 38 (15-8--38) career points.
Senior forward Lisa O'Brian (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) presently ranks as FSU's second all-time leading scorer and goal producer with 56 points and 23 markers. O'Brian's 10 career assists currently ranks third on the school's all-time list.
Junior goalkeeper Carla Gilbertson's (Waunakee, Wis.) six shutouts last campaign ranked first on the school's single-season leaders chart. She needs three more shutouts to match Connie Bigott's (2000-01) school-record career total of nine shutouts.
Southern Indiana is coming off a strong, but disappointing exhibition loss to the University of Evansville, 2-1. USI led the cross-town NCAA Division I foe for nearly 50 minutes before allowing a pair of goals in the second half.
USI was 6-12 overall and 3-7 in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play last campaign. Krissy Engelbrecht is entering her third season as the head coach for Southern Indiana.
The Bulldogs registered a 2-1 triumph over USI in the first-ever meeting between the two schools, which took place in last season's (Aug. 27) season-opening tournament at Grand Valley State.
Ferris continues action in the Grand Valley State Tournament Sunday (Aug. 28) by squaring off against Quincy (Ill.) in an 11 a.m. (EDT) non-league match at Allendale.
The Bulldogs and Quincy battled to a 2-2 double-overtime tie during last season's (Aug. 29) season-opening tournament in Allendale.
The Hawks hold a 1-0-1 series advantage entering Sunday's contest by virtue of their 2-1 triumph in 2002 (9/8) at Indianapolis, Ind.
Quincy, which is guided by 23rd-year head coach Bill Postiglione, was picked to finish 10th in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Preseason Coaches Poll. Last season (2004), the Hawks finished with an overall record of 3-9-4 and a GLVC mark of 2-6-2. QU is slated to open the 2005 campaign versus tourney host Grand Valley State Friday (Aug. 26) prior to meeting the Bulldogs.
Ferris State will host seven home contests this campaign at the FSU Varsity Soccer Field. The Bulldogs' first home encounter is a non-conference outing against Missouri-St. Louis Friday, Sept. 2, at 4 p.m. (EDT).
Head coach Melissa Lalonde is in her third season at the Bulldog helm and holds a 20-14-2 (.583) coaching mark at Ferris State. Lalonde presently is three victories shy of tying Pete Watkins (1999-02) for the most victories in school history. Watkins, who served as Ferris' first-ever head coach, compiled a 23-36-7 mark in four seasons.
