Ferris State Women's Soccer Notes

Oct. 10, 2005

Ferris State has presently won eight of its last 10 outings this campaign following Friday's (Oct. 7) 4-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) home win over Gannon and Sunday's (Oct. 9) 3-1 league home triumph over Mercyhurst at the FSU Varsity Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich. FSU is currently 9-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play this campaign.

Senior midfielder Jen Gaylor (Roscommon) notched her second career hat trick versus Gannon. The 5-9 Gaylor also previously scored three goals in a single contest against Aquinas in 2001 (9/12) and her performance was one shy of matching former teammate Emily Rogers' school-record total of four goals in a match.

Sunday's contest against Mercyhurst featured a combined total of 40 fouls and four yellow cards. The Bulldogs' 3-1 victory marked the program's first-ever win against the Lakers as MC held a 6-0 series' advantage entering the encounter.

Eight of FSU's last nine outings have been decided by two goals or less. Seven of Ferris' 14 matches this year have resulted in a 2-1 final score with Ferris claiming three of those victories.

Senior midfielder Andrea Moma (Middleville/Wayland Union) started her 67th career contest against Mercyhurst, which represents the most starting appearances in school history. Former Bulldog player Emily Rogers (2000-03) held the previous record of 66 career starts.

Andrea Moma and senior midfielder Kristin Aukeman (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) have both played in 70 career contests, which is currently tied for the second-highest figure in school history and one away from matching Kristin Bator's (2000-03) school-best 71 career appearances.

The Bulldogs have presently won five of their last six overtime contests dating back to last campaign. FSU was 3-0-1 in extra period action during the 2004 season and is 2-1 to date in overtime contests this year.

Jen Gaylor's nine goals to date this year ranks as the Bulldogs' most this season and already ranks seventh on the program's single-season goal scoring chart.

Sophomore midfielder Kristie Smilanich's (Kalamazoo/Christian) eight assists to date this year currently ranks tied for the program's second-highest single season assists figure and is four shy of matching Emily Rogers' school-best 12 assists set in 2003.

Junior goalkeeper Carla Gilbertson (Waunakee, Wis.) presently has 240 career saves and needs 72 more to match Alana Dombrowski's (2000-03) school-record total of 312 career saves. Her 23 victories (23-17-1) to date in net represent the most wins for a goalkeeper in FSU history.

Ferris State has totaled 30 goals and only given up 17 goals in 14 outings to date this year. The Bulldogs have also currently outshot their opponents 270-162 this season. Ferris has allowed only one goal or less in eight of its last 10 contests this season.

Senior forward Lindsey Pawloski (Royal Oak/Kimball) has tallied at least one point in six of her last eight appearances this season.

Senior forward Lisa O'Brian (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix) presently has the program's second-highest all-time points figure with 59 (24-11--59) career points while Lindsey Pawloski presently ranks third on the chart with 53 (21-11--53) career points.

Third-year Ferris head coach Melissa Lalonde became the program's all-time winningest coach with FSU's 3-1 non-league win at Charleston (W.Va.) on Sept. 11. She has a current 29-18-2 (.612) mark at the Bulldog helm.

FSU's 2005 squad features five of the program's top six career scoring leaders in Lisa O'Brian (2nd-59 points), Lindsey Pawloski (3rd-53), Jen Gaylor (4th-45), Andrea Moma (5th-37) and Kristie Smilanich (6th-26).

Three of FSU's final four outings this season are on the road. The only remaining home match is against Saginaw Valley State Sunday, Oct. 30, beginning at 12 p.m. (EDT). The contest will also represent FSU's annual Senior Day outing as the six-member senior class will be introducted prior to the match.

The Bulldogs will visit Ashland Saturday, Oct. 15, for a 1 p.m. (EDT) league outing in Ashland, Ohio. Ferris then will face conference foe Findlay Sunday, Oct. 16, beginning at 12 p.m. (EDT) in Findlay, Ohio.

Ashland is ranked sixth in the latest (Oct. 4) National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Great Lakes Regional Rankings.

Ashland holds a 6-0 series' advantage heading into Saturday's meeting with FSU and has outscored the Bulldogs 26-2 all-time. UF maintains a 3-2-1 edge versus Ferris State although the Bulldogs won last season's (10/24) meeting 3-2 in overtime at Big Rapids, Mich. Ferris has won two-straight series' matchups against the Oilers.

Grand Valley State leads the GLIAC standings with a 4-0 conference record entering action this week. Ashland (3-0) and Saginaw Valley State (2-0) both remain unbeaten in league play while FSU (3-1) and Findlay (1-1) have one conference loss apiece to date.
