Ferris State Women's Soccer Notes
Sept. 2, 2003
The Ferris State women's soccer team opened the 2003 campaign with a 3-0 mark as the Bulldogs captured two non-league road victories and a neutral site contest last weekend (Aug. 29-Sept. 1).
Ferris' 3-1 win last Friday (Aug. 29) at Saint Joseph's (Ind.) was the Bulldogs' first season-opening victory since posting a 7-0 home win over Manchester (Ind.) on Sept. 1, 2000. The contest also marked the debut of first-year FSU head coach Melissa Eging, who previously served as an assistant coach at Central Michigan and head coach for NCAA Division III member Hamilton (N.Y.).
Sophomore forward Lisa O'Brian (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) registered a team-leading 13 points and six goals in Ferris' three contests last weekend. The 5-6 O'Brian notched a personal career-high three goals in last Saturday's (Aug. 30) 5-0 win over Lewis (Ill.), which ranks tied for second place to date among FSU's all-time single-game goal scoring leaders. She added two goals in Ferris' season-opening victory at Saint Joseph's (Ind.) and had a goal along with an assist in Monday's (Sept. 1) neutral-site victory against Missouri-St. Louis.
Ferris' current 3-0 mark represents the program's best start in its five-year history. The Bulldogs' previous best mark after three outings was a 2-1 record during the 2000 campaign.
FSU tied a team record for most assists in a single-contest with five at Lewis (Ill.). Ferris' also totaled five assists at Gannon (10/26) and versus Northern Michigan (10/20) last season.
Freshman midfielder Amanda Gillison (Traverse City, Mich./West) notched the game-wining goal with 3:49 left in the second half to lead FSU to a 3-2 non-league win over Missouri-St. Louis on Monday (Sept. 1) at Bourbonnais, Ill.
Senior forward Emily Rogers (Traverse City/Central) currently has 88 career points to date and is 12 shy of notching her 100th career point. The 5-6 Rogers presently is Ferris' career leader in both points and goals (33).
Lisa O'Brian moved into second place among FSU's career points and goal-scoring leaders with her three-point output against Missouri-St. Louis. O'Brian, who has 25 points and 10 goals in her career to date, trails only current Bulldog senior Emily Rogers on Ferris' career leaders lists.
O'Brian's six goals to date this campaign currently ranks tied for fifth place on FSU's single-season chart and is five shy of tying the school's single-season record (11) posted by current FSU senior forward Emily Rogers during both the 2000 and 2002 campaigns.
Ferris State is idle until Tuesday, Sept. 9, when the Bulldogs will host Aquinas in a 4 p.m. (EDT) non-conference match at the FSU Varsity Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich. The 2003 home opener represents the first of three consecutive home matches for FSU.
