Ferris' Lisa O'Brian Tabbed GLIAC Player Of The Week
Sept. 3, 2003
Sophomore forward Lisa O'Brian (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix) of the 2003 Ferris State women's soccer team has been selected the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Player of the Week for her performance last weekend.
O'Brian registered a team-leading 13 points and had six goals in Ferris' three victories to become the first FSU women's soccer player to receive the league's weekly award since former FSU goaltender Connie Biggot earned the distinction in 2001 (Oct. 8).
The 5-6 O'Brian notched a personal career-high three goals in last Saturday's (Aug. 30) 5-0 win at Lewis (Ill.), which ranks tied for second place to date among FSU's all-time single-game goal scoring leaders. She added two goals in Ferris' 3-1 season-opening victory last Friday (Aug. 29) at Saint Joseph's (Ind.) and had a goal along with an assist in Monday's (Sept. 1) 3-2 neutral-site victory against Missouri-St. Louis.
O'Brian, who has 25 points and 10 goals in her career to date, moved into second place among FSU's career points and goal-scoring leaders with her three-point output against Missouri-St. Louis. She trails only current Bulldog senior forward Emily Rogers (Traverse City/Central) on Ferris' career leaders lists. Her six goals to date this campaign currently ranks tied for fifth place on FSU's single-season chart and is five shy of tying the school's single-season record (11) posted by Rogers during both the 2000 and 2002 campaigns.
During the 2002 campaign, O'Brian ranked third among the team's scoring leaders with 14 points on four goals and four assists. She registered two game-winning goals while starting 18 contests.
Ferris' current 3-0 mark represents the program's best start in its five-year history. FSU's win at Saint Joseph's was also the Bulldogs' first season-opening victory since posting a 7-0 home win over Manchester (Ind.) on Sept. 1, 2000. The contest marked the debut of first-year FSU head coach Melissa Eging, who previously served as an assistant coach at Central Michigan and head coach for NCAA Division III member Hamilton (N.Y.).
Ferris State is idle until Tuesday, Sept. 9, when the Bulldogs will host Aquinas in a 4 p.m. (EDT) non-conference match at the FSU Varsity Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich. The 2003 home opener represents the first of three consecutive home matches for FSU.
