FERRIS CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS EARN ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS
Bulldog Squads Recognized For Work In Classroom
The Ferris State University men’s and women’s cross country squads, under the direction of 10th-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas, have both earned 2005 NCAA Division II All-Academic Team honors as chosen and announced recently by the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The selection of the all-academic teams was based on cumulative grade point averages submitted by member head coaches for the fall 2005 academic term. All teams with runners from their respective regional meets compiling a cumulative 3.00 grade point average (gpa) or higher were honored for their performance. Those individuals finishing in the top 30 percent of all competitors at the regional meet and who posted a 3.25 gpa or better were also recognized.
The Ferris State women’s team garnered team academic laurels for the eighth consecutive season as a result of posting a 3.19 team gpa. FSU was one of 85 NCAA Division II schools to claim the distinction and among nine Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member schools receiving the recognition. The Bulldog men's squad was one of 60 teams selected with a 3.12 gpa. Eight league men's institutions made the list. The FSU men have presently earned all-academic team laurels six consecutive seasons to date.
Individually, senior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) claimed individual women's All-Academic Team accolades for Ferris State. The annual women's list included 189 different runners earning the honor.
The Ferris State women's cross country team captured fifth place at the 2005 NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Championships (Nov. 5) held on FSU’s Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldog women's team finished one spot short of qualifying as a team for the national championships for the second consecutive year. FSU also took third overall in the GLIAC Championships this season.
Irwin became the first female women's cross country All-American in Bulldog history as she placed 20th in the NCAA-II Championships (Nov. 19) in Pomona, Calif. Her performance also represented the highest finish ever for a FSU women's performer at the Division II Women's Cross Country Championships.
Ferris' men's squad placed ninth at the league championships and 17th in the regional field during the fall 2005 campagin.
