Nov. 5: Ferris State Hosts NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Championships

The Ferris State University Athletics Department hosted the 2005 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships Saturday (Nov. 5) at FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.

The event drew nearly 300 competitors and included 20 men's programs in addition to 22 women's teams.

The Bulldog women's team finished one spot short of qualifying as a team for the national championships as the Bulldogs placed fifth for the second consecutive year. Grand Valley State won the women's field with 29 points, Wisconsin-Parkside finished second (110), Southern Indiana was third (113) and Northern Michigan placed fourth (123). Ferris tallied 154 points in the 22-team division.

The top four teams in both the men's and women's divisions plus the top two individuals not associated with one of the qualifying teams earned bids to the NCAA Division II Championships slated to be held Saturday, Nov. 19, in Pomona, Calif.

FSU senior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) claimed one of the individual national-qualifying spots as she placed fourth in a time of 21:45.1 on the 6K course. GVSU's Mandi Zemba claimed the women's overall regional title (20:47.0).

Bulldog freshman Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) also received all-region recognition as she took 11th place (22:27.9). All-Region awards were presented to the top 15 finishers in both the men's and women's races.

Junior Julia Viel (Big Rapids) was 29th (23:08.7), freshman Jenelle Keinath (Millington/Saginaw Valley Lutheran) came in 49th (23:45.1) and sophomore Jackie Green (Portage/Northern) placed 61st (24:06.0). Senior Kristen Balla (Farmington) finished 77th (24:34.1) and junior Leanna Wolf (Foutain/Mason County Central) received 85th place (24:48.9) in the 150-runner field.

Grand Valley State netted 43 points in earning the men's overall title. Wayne State placed second overall (54), Southern Indiana took third place (60) and Saginaw Valley State finished fourth (105). Ferris took 17th place with 495 points in the 20-team division.

Sophomore Ray Rollet (South Rockwood/Aiport) guided the men's squad by finishing 76th overall (34:22.6) in the 141-runner field. Sophomore Nate Penny (Zeeland) took 88th place (34:39.4), freshman Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) was 109th (35:16.9) and freshman Curtis Begley (Ann Arbor/Saline) placed 116th (35:38.9).

Junior Barrington Dykes (Greenville/Central Montcalm) captured 119th place (35:45.8), junior Chase Gibson (Big Rapids) finished 139th (37:27.3) and senior Justin Barts (Richland/Gull Lake) also competed and was 141st (38:01.8) overall.

The NCAA-II Championships will be hosted by Cal-Poly Pomona. This season will mark Irwin's second-straight appearance as an individual at the natioanl meet.

Oct. 22: Ferris Women Third, Men Ninth At GLIAC Championships

The Ferris State University women's cross country team captured third place while the Bulldog men took ninth overall in the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships held Saturday (Oct. 22) at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming, Mich. The league meet was hosted by Northern Michigan University.

The women's squad totaled 106 points in finishing third for the second consecutive season. The 6,000-meter event was won by Grand Valley State with 23 points. Northern Michigan placed second in the 13-team women's field with 73 points.

Ferris senior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) earned runner-up honors individually as she placed second in a time of 22:57.6. Mandi Zemba of GVSU won the overall women's crown in a time of 22;14. Irwin had finished first in all five of her meets this season prior to the GLIAC Championships.

Bulldog freshman Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) took 16th place overall (24:37.3), junior Julia Viel (Big Rapids) was 23rd (24:54.9) and senior Kristen Balla (Farmington) finished 40th (25:33.4) among the 144 runners who completed the course.

Sophomore Jackie Green (Portage/Northern) placed 45th (25:41.2), freshman Jenelle Keinath (Millington/Saginaw Valley Lutheran) came in 53rd (26:00.0) and junior Leanna Wolf (Foutain/Mason County Central) received 60th place (26:16.6) for the Bulldogs.

Freshman Ashley Lehmann (Grand Rapids/Grandville) was 70th (26:37.0), senior Geneva Jones (Detroit/Cooley) finished 82nd (26:56.7) and freshman Leticia Carvahlo-Pinto (Big Rapids/Morley-Stanwood) registered a 97th (27:42.7) place performance.

The Bulldog men compiled 268 points in the 8,000-meter men's race. GVSU also claimed the men's title (17 points) while Wayne State placed second (44) in the 11-team field. Nate Peck of GVSU won the men's race in a time of 26:23.0.

FSU sophomore Ray Rollet (South Rockwood/Aiport) guided the men's squad by finishing 42nd overall (28:21.1) in the 135-runner field. Sophomore Nate Penny (Zeeland) took 51st place (28:48.1), freshman Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) was 68th (29:24.4) and freshman Curtis Begley (Ann Arbor/Saline) placed 78th (30:02.2).

Junior Barrington Dykes (Greenville/Central Montcalm) captured 83rd place (30:12.9), junior Beau Poquette (Iron Mountain/Kingsford) came in 99th (30:39.7) and junior Chase Gibson (Big Rapids) finished 102nd (30:52.7). Senior Justin Barts (Richland/Gull Lake) also competed and was 112th (31:27.5) overall.

Ferris State will host the 2005 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships Saturday, Nov. 5, beginning at 11 a.m. (EST) in Big Rapids, Mich. The event will be held at FSU's Katke Golf Course.

Oct. 7: Ferris Competes In Annual Michigan Intercollegiate Championships

The Ferris State University men's and women's cross country teams took part in the annual Michigan Intercollegiate Championships Friday (Oct. 7) in Rochester, Mich. The event was hosted by Oakland University.

The Bulldog women's squad split into two teams for the event with one squad earning runner-up honors in the 6K race and the other placing 13th in the 4K event.

In the 6K race, the Bulldogs totaled 54 points in finishing second behind Grand Valley State (32 points). The field included 11 squads. FSU was paced by senior Jenny Irwin, who earned her fifth consecutive individual meet title this season by winning the event in a time of 21:40.9. Seventy-three runners competed in the 6K race.

Freshman Mikinzie Stuart took 11th place (23:23.0), junior Julia Viel was 12th (23:26.3), sophomore Jackie Green placed 14th (23:30.4), freshman Jenelle Keinath was 16th (23:33.5) and senior Kristen Balla finished 19th (23:44.3).

In the 4K event, Ferris registered 241 points in the field of 19 squads. GVSU tied Michigan for first place in the 4K race as both teams netted 23 points. Central Michigan was third overall with 72 points.

Junior Leanna Wolf was 46th (15:28.3), senior Geneva Jones finished 49th (15:34.8), sophomore Chandra Robinson took 66th place (15:55.3) and freshmanLeticia Carvalho-Pinto placed 80th (16:59.3) in the 140-runner field.

The Bulldog men took 10th place in the 8K event with 222 points. Grand Valley State won the men's division (40) with Saginaw Valley State second (54) and Eastern Michigan third (75) in the 13-team field.

Sophomore Ray Rollet led the Bulldogs as he placed 22nd overall (26:31.7) among the 105 runners in the field. Sophomore Nate Penny came in 32nd (26:58.2), freshman Mike Mangieri was 44th (27:28.5) and freshman Curtis Begley took 61st place (28:36.4).

Junior Barrington Dykes finished 63rd (28:41.6), junior Chase Gibson placed 67th (28:59.3) and senior Justin Barts registered a 70th-place performance (29:22.5).

Ferris State will take part in the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday, Oct. 22, beginning at 11 a.m. (EDT) in Marquette, Mich.

Oct. 1: Bulldogs Compete In Loyola Lakefront Invite; Women Win Share Of Title

The Ferris State University women's cross country team tied for the maroon division championship in Saturday's (Oct. 1) 33rd annual running of the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational held at Montrose Beach in Chicago, Ill.

Ferris totaled 102 points to earn a share of the 27-team division for the second consecutive year. Macalester (Minn.) also totaled 102 points while Indianapolis placed third (132) and Case Western Reserve (Ohio) was fourth (164 points).

FSU senior Jenny Irwin won her fourth-straight individual meet title this campaign as she finished first in a time of 17:47 among 310 runners competing in the division on the 5K course.

Freshman Mikinzie Stuart was 11th overall (19:04), junior Julia Viel placed 26th (19:29), senior Kristen Balla took 31st place (19:34), senior Geneva Jones finished 46th (19:51) and freshman Jenelle Keinath recorded a 54th-place finish (20:02).

Junior Leanna Wolf finished 58th (20:07), sophomore Jackie Green placed 72nd (20:23) and freshman Ashley Lehmann was 85th (20:35). Sophomore Chandra Robinson took 87th place (20:36) and freshman Leticia Carvahlo-Pinto placed 146th (21:41).

The Bulldog men finished 12th overall in the maroon division with 333 points. Macalester (Minn.) and Indianapolis tied for first place (93) and Northern Kentucky was third (104) among the 25 teams participating in the field.

Sophomore Ray Rollet led the Bulldogs as he finished 32nd overall in a time of 27:08 on the 8K course. FSU sophomore Nate Penny placed 53rd (27:35), freshman Mike Mangieri was 62nd (27:51), freshman Curtis Begley took 106th (28:39) and junior Barrington Dykes finished 116th (28:56).

Junior Beau Poquette came in 147th (29:38), senior Justin Barts placed 162nd (30:14) and junior Chase Gibson took 180th place (30:42). The men's field included 254 runners.

The Bulldogs will next compete in the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships Friday, Oct. 7, beginning at 4 p.m. (EDT) in Rochester, Mich.

Sept. 23: Bulldog Cross Country Teams Host Home Invitational

The Ferris State University men's and women's cross country teams hosted the 30th-straight Bulldog Cross Country Invitational Friday (Sept. 23) at FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldog women placed third of 11 competing teams with 67 points while the men were seventh of 10 competing schools with 177 total points.

FSU senior Jenny Irwin claimed the overall women's title in the 5K event as she clocked 18:00.10 in the field of 99 competitors. Twelve Bulldog women's runners took part in the race.

Bulldog freshman Mikinzie Stuart placed fifth overall (18:56.70), junior Julia Viel took 14th place (19:15.40) and freshman Jenelle Keinath was 20th (19:24.20) for FSU.

Senior Kristen Balla finished 32nd (19:45.70), sophomore Jackie Green recorded a 33rd place effort (19:47.20) and junior Leanna Wolf came in 35th (19:51.50).

Senior Geneva Jones was 40th (20:02.00), freshman Ashley Lehmann finished 53rd (20:38.00) and sophomore Chandra Robinson took 56th place (20:44.90). Bulldog sophomore Ashley Sholl placed 68th (21:38.60) and freshman Leticia Carvahlo-Pinto took 69th place (21:43.40) for Ferris State.

Sophomore Ray Rollet paced the Bulldog men's team as he came in 23rd overall (26:04.80) among 115 men's runners in the 8K event.

FSU sophomore Nate Penny was 27th (26:27.60), freshman Mike Mangieri placed 47th (27:14.40) and junior Corey Reinke took 52nd place (27:30.60).

Junior Chase Gibson registered a 62nd-place performance (28:04.10), junior Barrington Dykes placed 75th (28:22.60), junior Dan DeLeeuw was 82nd (28:42.90) and senior Justin Barts finished 83rd overall (28:46.50). Freshman Curtis Begley also competed and was 88th (29:04.70) as nine Ferris men's runners saw action.

In addition to Ferris State, the invitational field included a variety of student-athletes from both local schools and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member institutions.

This year (2005) marked the 30th-straight (31st overall) running of the Bulldog Invitational. Either a men's or women's event has been held each year since 1976.

The invitational also allowed participants an opportunity to run the host course for the 2005 NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Championships, which will be hosted by FSU on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Katke Golf Course.

Ferris State will next take part in the Loyola Lakefront Invitational Saturday, Oct. 1, in Chicago, Ill. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. (EDT).

Sept. 10: Bulldog Teams Place Second At Northern Michigan Invitational

The Ferris State University men's and women's cross country teams both earned runner-up accolades in the Northern Michigan Invitational held Saturday (Sept. 10) at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming, Mich.

The Bulldog men's team tallied 40 points in finishing behind Michigan Tech's first-place total of 21 points. Northern Michigan (76 points) and Finlandia (120) also competed in the event. In the women's field, Ferris had 51 points. The women's division was won by NMU (21) while Michigan Tech placed third (62) and Finlandia was fourth (120).

Sophomore Ray Rollet led the Ferris men's squad by winning the men's division. He was clocked in 29:03.5 and edged out the other 46 runners in the field.

Freshman Curtis Begley placed sixth overall (29:42.9), sophomore Nate Penny was ninth (29:54.4), and freshman Mike Mangieri took 11th place (30:06.6). Junior Corey Reinke finished 16th (30:50.2), junior Barrington Dykes came in 23rd (32:01.1), senior Justin Barts placed 26th (32:19.8) and junior Dan DeLeeuw was 28th (32:29.6).

Ferris State senior Jenny Irwin won the women's event in a time of 19:07.7. The women's field included 51 runners.

Sophomore Jackie Green was eighth overall (21:01.0), senior Kristen Balla placed 12th (21:12.8) and freshman Mikinzie Stuart took 17th place (21:31.5). Junior Julia Viel came in 20th (21:36.3), junior Leanna Wolf finished 25th (21:58.1) and freshman Ashley Lehmann received 31st-place honors (22:26.3).

Freshman Jenelle Keinath placed 32nd (22:41.2), senior Geneva Jones was 34th (22:49.5) and freshman Leticia Carvalho-Pinto took 39th place overall (23:46.4). Sophomore Chandra Robinson also competed and registered a 43rd-place performance (24:02.2) while sophomore Ashley Sholl finished 46th (24:33.1).

Ferris State will host the annual Bulldog Invitational Friday, Sept. 23, at FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich. The event is set for a 4 p.m. (EDT) start.


Sept. 2: Ferris Opens Season At CMU Drenth Memorial

The Ferris State University men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2005 campaign by taking part in the 20th annual Central Michigan Jeff Drenth Memorial in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

The non-scoring meet was held at CMU's University Park course and included the host Chippewas, Michigan State, Lake Superior State, Ferris State and unattached athletes.

Sophomore Ray Rollet led the Bulldog men's team with a 26th place finish in the 5K event. He was clocked in 16:45 among the 66 runners who competed.

Sophomore Nate Penny took 34th place (17:09), freshman Mike Mangieri was 35th (17:13), freshman Curtis Begley finished 37th (17:20), junior Corey Reinke placed 40th (17:42) and junior Barrington Dykes came in 42nd (17:51).

Junior Dan DeLeeuw finished 45th (18:05), junior Beau Poquette took 46th place (18:06), junior Chase Gibson was 50th (18:47) and senior Justin Barts placed 51st (18:52).

Ferris State senior Jenny Irwin won the women's 5K event in a time of 18:06. The women's field included 55 participants.

Freshman Mikinzie Stuart finished 14th overall (19:48), senior Kristen Balla placed 15th (19:49), sophomore Jackie Green was 18th (19:54), freshman Jenelle Keinath took 20th (19:58) and junior Julia Viel registered a 21st-place performance (20:01).

Freshman Ashley Lehmann came in 24th (20:05), junior Leanna Wolf took 30th (20:33), senior Geneva Jones placed 33rd (21:02), freshman Leticia Carvalho-Pinto was 36th (22:00) and sophomore Ashley Sholl finished 42nd (22:34).

The Bulldogs will compete in the Northern Michigan Invitational Saturday, Sept. 10, beginning at 11 a.m. (EDT) in Marquette, Mich.
