Smith Chosen CCHA Offensive Player of the Week
Bulldog Senior Forward Earns His First League Award
Ferris State University men's ice hockey senior center Brett Smith (Guelph, Ontario) has been chosen this week's Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Offensive Player of the Week as a result of his noteworthy performance in the Bulldogs' league series at Bowling Green State this last weekend (Dec. 5-6).
Smith, who received the weekly CCHA honor for the first time in his career and is the first Ferris State skater to do so this season, registered four points in the two-game set against the Falcons with a goal and three assists while producing a +3 plus/minus efficiency rating. The FSU assistant captain scored the game-winning goal in the third period of Friday's 2-1 victory and assisted on all three Bulldog goals in Saturday's 3-3 overtime tie, including the game-tying goal with three seconds remaining in regulation.

This season, Smith is off to his best start ever with a career and team-leading 18 points (8-10--18) in 16 contests. The 10 assists are a personal best while the eight goals matches his career-high total of a season ago. Smith has also compiled a team-high six multiple-point game performances this campaign. He presently is midst a career-best six-game point streak with 11 total points (4-7--11) during that span.
In 131 career games to date, Smith has recorded 46 points on 22 goals and 24 assists. He has scored four game-winning goals and four power-play markers to go along with nine multi-point game efforts in his Ferris career.
Ferris State is currently 6-8-2 overall with a 4-7-1 mark in the CCHA. The Bulldogs enter the holiday break on a season-high five-game (3-0-2) unbeaten streak.
The Bulldogs are now idle until Saturday, Dec. 27, when they take on the University of Massachusetts Lowell River Hawks in the opening round of the Badger Hockey Showdown in Madison, Wis. Opening faceoff is set for 5:30 p.m. (EST) at the University of Wisconsin's 15,237-seat Kohl Center. Host Wisconsin entertains Union College in the tourney's second opening-round contest at 8:30 p.m. The third-place and championship contests are scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 28, at 5:30 p.m. (EST) and 8:30 p.m., respectively.
