MEN'S ICE HOCKEY FALLS TO NATIONALLY NUMBER-ONE RANKED IRISH
The Ferris State men's ice hockey team lost to nationally number-one ranked Notre Dame in Friday's (Dec. 5) Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) weekend series opener as the Irish scored the contest's final three goals to notch a 3-1 victory at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
Junior right wing Cody Chupp (Big Rapids) scored Ferris State's lone goal with a second-period power-play tally while freshman goaltender Taylor Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) made 24 saves for the Bulldogs, who did outshoot the Irish 31-27. Ferris State managed 13 shots in the opening period while Notre Dame posted five shots on net.
Chupp opened the scoring early in the second period as he managed to tip the loose puck into the ND goal past Jordan Pearce just outside the crease in traffic. Junior right wing Blair Riley (Kamloops, British Columbia) along with sophomore defenseman Zach Redmond (Traverse City) each earned an assist. Redmond blasted one from high above the slot which hit off Pearce back out to Riley, who put the puck back on net. The puck caromed off Pearce's pad and was tipped in by Chupp, who claimed his fifth goal of the season.
Notre Dame would counter with back-to-back second-period lamplighters following FSU's lone goal. Ben Ryan scored at the 8:29 mark to tie the game and then just over a minute later, Calle Ridderwall backhanded the puck past Nelson for what would be the game-winning marker.
Chrisitian Hanson would produce the Irish's final score on a power-play goal with 3:58 remaining in the game to put the visitors up 3-1. Ferris appeared to draw within a goal with 52 seconds left in the game on a Mike Embach (Orland Park, Ill.) tally, but the goal by the sophomore left winger was disallowed as the Bulldogs were whistled for a team penalty with too many men on the ice.
Jordan Pearce earned the game's first star as he concluded with 30 saves, including 13 in the first frame, in helping the Irish extend their current unbeaten streak to 11 straight (9-0-2).
Notre Dame, which garnered top billing in all three national college hockey polls this week, was successful 2 of eight times on the power play while Ferris State made good on one of six such chances.
The Bulldogs are now 7-7-3 overall and 6-5-2-0 in the CCHA with the loss while the Irish improved their season record to 11-3-2 overall and 7-2-2-2 in the CCHA.
