Freshman Taylor Nelson Receives Honorable Mention Accolades

Taylor Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan), a freshman goaltender on the 2008-09 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team, is among six players to receive honorable mention recognition to the 2008-09 Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) All-Rookie Team. The announcement was made Monday (March 9) by the league office.

Nelson compiled a 5-8-4 mark in net this season to go with a 2.50 goals-against average (44 goals allowed) and a .912 save percentage (457 saves) in 19 appearances. A starter in 16 outings this campaign, Nelson totaled 1054:24 minutes between the posts for the 2008-09 season.
The 6-1, 171-pound netminder recorded at least 20 or more saves in a game on 13 occasions, which included 35 stops against Ohio State (Jan. 17), 34 saves versus Nebraska-Omaha (Jan. 31), and 32 at Michigan (Feb. 28).
Earlier this season (Feb. 2), Nelson was selected as the CCHA's Rookie of the Week after notching a .970 save percentage (64 saves) and a 0.96 goals-against average (two goals allowed) in 125 minutes of action in two outings versus Nebraska-Omaha (Jan. 30-31).
Nelson placed ninth among the CCHA netminders in goals-against average (2.39) and was 10th in save percentage (.918) in 15 league outings. He produced the third best goals-against average in the league for freshmen and ranked second in save percentage for conference contests only.
Nationally, Nelson currently ranks 28th in goals-against average, 36th in save percentage, and 53rd in winning percentage (.412).
Nelson entered this season listed fourth by Inside College Hockey (INCH) among the nation's top 10 incoming collegiate goaltenders.
With Nelson's selection, the Ferris State men's ice hockey program presently features 35 skaters who have attained either CCHA all-rookie or rookie honorable mention kudos. A season ago, Justin Menke (Shamrock, Saskatchewan), Zach Redmond (Traverse City), and Pat Nagle (Bloomfield) all garnered league all-rookie honorable mention laurels.
Ferris State concluded the 2008-09 season at 12-19-7 overall with a ninth-place 9-15-5-2 CCHA mark (25 league points).
