Weekly Notes Games 17-18: Ferris State at Toyota UConn Hockey Classic

    FSU Hockey FSU Hockey At A Glance: The Ferris State University men’s ice hockey team will take part in the 15th annual Toyota UConn Hockey Classic this weekend (Dec. 29-30) at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. The Bulldogs face the Brown Bears in Saturday’s (Dec. 29) 4 p.m. (EST) semifinal-round opening contest while the host Connecticut Huskies take on Army Black Knights in the second semifinal-round game, beginning at 7:15 p.m. (EST). The tournament’s consolation and championship games will be conducted Sunday (Dec. 30) at 4 p.m. (EST) and 7:15 p.m. (EST), respectively.

    The Records: Ferris State is currently 7-8-1 overall and 6-6-0 in the CCHA after dropping both games of a home-and-home league series against nationally-ranked Michigan State (12/7-8). The Bulldogs suffered a 4-3 series-opening loss (12/7) to the Spartans at FSU’s Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich., and then fell 4-1 (12/8) in the weekend series finale at MSU’s Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich. Ferris is 3-5-0 in its last eight outings.. Ferris State compiled a 14-22-3 overall record for the 2006-07 season, which included a ninth-place 10-16-2 CCHA mark. The Bulldogs were 9-8-1 at home, 5-14-1 on the road, and 0-0-1 at neutral sites a season ago.

    Brown is 1-7-3 overall with a 1-3-3 mark in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) after suffering its fifth consecutive loss with a 2-1 setback to Yale (Dec. 8) in the 22nd annual Mayor’s Cup at New Haven, Conn. The Bears are 1-6-1 in their last eight appearances to date.

    Army is 6-6-2 overall and 6-3-2 in the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA) after splitting a league home-and-home series against Sacred Heart (11/30-12/1) in the Black Knights’ most recent action. Army posted a 4-2 home win (11/30) at West Point, N.Y., before dropping a 4-2 decision (12/1) at Milford, Conn. The Black Knights are 4-2-2 in their last eight outings.

    Connecticut is 4-9-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA) to date. The Huskies, who are 3-4-1 in their last eight contests, dropped a 4-1 league decision to American International in their most recent outing (Dec. 4) in Springfield, Mass. UConn sports a 1-4-0 home ledger this campaign.

    The Coaches: Ferris StateBob Daniels (Michigan State, 1982), 16th season, 246-294-52 (.459) – (0-0-0 vs. Brown; 1-0-0 vs. Army; 3-0-0 vs. Connecticut). Daniels has the distinction of being the all-time winningest coach in Ferris State history. He was honored as the 2002-03 CCHA Coach of the Year and the Inside College Hockey (INCH) Coach of the Year, but the crowning highlight of his coaching career was being chosen as the recipient of the 2003 Spencer Penrose Award as the ACHA's Division I National Hockey Coach of the Year.

    BrownRoger Grillo (Maine, 1986), 6th season, 110-168-46 (.410) - (0-0-0 vs. Ferris State).

    ArmyBrian Riley (Brown, 1983), 4th season, 44-57-17 (.445) - (0-1-0 vs. Ferris State).

    ConnecticutBruce Marshall (Connecticut, 1985), 20th season, 276-271-53 (.504) - (0-3-0 vs. Ferris State).

    About Brown: The Bears are paced in scoring by senior forward Jeff Prough (3-5=8) along with senior defenseman Sean Hurley (1-6=7) and senior forward Chris Poli (2-4=6). Sophomore goaltender Dan Rosen (1-5-3, 3.32 GAA, .901sv%) has played in nine of BU’s 11 games while junior Mark Sibbald (0-2-0, 3.04 GAA, .926sv%) is the primary backup.

    About Army: Sophomore forward Owen Meyer (11-9=20) along with senior forwards Luke Flicek (6-14=20) and Bryce Hollweg (6-10=16) have all cracked the double-figure scoring column. Meyer and Flicek both rank tied for sixth nationally in points per game (1.43 avg.) while Hollweg is tied for 29th-place honors (1.14 avg.). Meyer is also listed fifth on the national charts in goals per contest (0.79 avg.). Junior Josh Kassel (5-5-1, 2.46 GAA, .905sv%) and frosh Jay Clark (1-1-1, 0.98 GAA, .966sv%) are Army’s netminders. The Black Knights rank 14th in scoring defense (2.29) and 15th in the penalty kill (87.1%)?among the national leaders.

    About Connecticut: Junior defenseman Sean Erickson (3-8=11) is the only skater with a double-digit points total. Freshman forward Andrew Olson (6-3=9) and sophomore forward Michael Coppola (5-3=8) are also among UConn’s leading point getters. Sophomore Beau Erickson (4-8-1, 3.24 GAA, .901sv%) has been the regular in net this season. The Huskies are ranked 19th nationally in penalty killing (86.7%).

    The All-Time Series: Ferris State and Brown will meet for the first time ever. The Bulldogs are 1-0-0 against Army after registering a 5-2 victory over the Black Knights in the third-place game (10/15) of the 2005 Mutual of Omaha Maverick Stampede at Omaha, Neb. Ferris State holds a 3-0-0 advantage over Connecticut to date. The Bulldogs skated to a 5-0 win against the Huskies in the consolation game (12/30) of the 2002 UConn Classic. FSU then swept the Huskies in a two-game set (11/12-13) during the 2004-05 campaign with a pair of 5-3 and 5-2 victories at Ferris' Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

    30th Anniversary – The 2007-08 season represents the 30th anniversary for the Ferris State men’s ice hockey program competing at the NCAA Division I level. The Bulldogs registered a 10-24-0 overall record in the 1978-79 season which marked their NCAA Division I debut.

    2007-08 CCHA Preseason Polls: Ferris State was selected to finish ninth with 44 points in the 2007-08 CCHA Coaches Poll while the Bulldogs were tabbed eighth by the media (279 points), which was announced Sept. 25, 2007 during the CCHA's annual media day event at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich. Miami (114 points) was selected as the favorite in the coaches poll while 2006-07 NCAA Division I National Champion Michigan State (701 points) claimed top honors in the media balloting. A total of 63 media members ranked the 12 CCHA teams in projected order of finish for the regular season. League coaches ranked the CCHA teams, excluding their own school.

    At the Toyota UConn Classic – The Bulldogs will be making their second UConn Classic Tournament appearance in the program’s history after participating in the 2002 event. Ferris captured third place with a 5-0 victory over host Connecticut (12/30) after suffering a 5-4 overtime loss to Alabama-Huntsville in a semifinal-round game (12/29).

    Regular-Season Tourneys – Ferris State is 17-16-4 (.514) all-time in regular-season tournaments after compiling a 0-1-1 mark last season (12/29-30) at Minnesota’s Dodge Holiday Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. The Bulldogs skated to a 1-1 overtime tie against Massachusetts (12/29) in the semfinals, but advanced to the championship game by winning 3-1 in the shootout. FSU then dropped a 5-2 decision to host Minnesota in the title matchup. The last time Ferris captured a regular-season tourney crown was in the 2004-05 season when the Bulldogs defended their Badger Hockey Showdown title with a 5-3 win over host Wisconsin (1/1). FSU claimed the 2003 Badger Hockey Showdown as a result of posting a 3-1 victory against host Wisconsin (12/28). Head coach Bob Daniels sports a 13-9-2 mark in regular-season tourney action.

    Scoring Leaders – Sophomore center-right wing Cody Chupp (Big Rapids) and junior left wing Brendan Connolly (Canmore, Alberta) have achieved double-figure points totals this season in the Bulldogs’ initial 16 games. Chupp (4-8=12), the 2006-07 FSU Rookie of the Year Award recipient, and Connolly (5-6=11) have combined for 20.7% (23-111) of the team’s points output this campaign.

    Ahead of Last Year – The Bulldogs’ 12 points (6-6-0 in the CCHA) in its first 12 league games to date this season surpasses their six league points (2-8-2 CCHA) at this time a season ago. Ferris went on to finish the 2006-07 campaign with a ninth-place 22 league points total (10-16-2 CCHA).

    Shot Comparison – Ferris State is averaging 31.4 shots on goal (503 total) in its first 16 outings this season compared to a 34.1 shots on goal average (545 total) last season. The opposition has averaged 27.9 shots per game (447 total) to date this campaign and recorded an identical average a season ago at this time. The Bulldogs have outshot their opponent on nine occasions this season and managed to do so 11 times a season ago following their initial 16 encounters.

    Reaching A Milestone – Junior goaltender Mitch O’Keefe (Almonte, Ontario) recently surpassed the 4,000 mark in career minutes played and is the sixth Ferris State netminder to accomplish the feat. O’Keefe has currently amassed 4,092 career minutes in 70 appearances and is 392 minutes away from moving into a fifth-place tie with Craig Lisko (1990-94; 4,484 career minutes) among the program’s all-time leaders. O’Keefe presently ranks second on FSU’s career leaders list in goals-against average (2.76), third in save percentage (.900), eighth in career saves (1,685), and is tied for 10th in victories (24).

    His Month – Senior defenseman Jim Jorgensen (Sault Ste. Marie) has generated nine points (0-9=9) in 17 career December games to date, which included four points (0-4=4)?in six games last season.

    Interesting Tidbit – Ferris State has totaled 111 points (42-69=111) through its first 16 games this campaign after racking up 112 points (40-72=112) a season ago following the Bulldogs’ initial 16 outings. Defensively, FSU has allowed only 101 points (37-64=101) compared to 137 (54-83=137) last season at this juncture.

    Crazy Eights – Junior right wing Corey Couturier’s (Traverse City) goal at Michigan State (12/8) marked his eighth point (4-4=8) this season in 14 games which equals his points total (3-5=8) in 22 outings a season ago. 48.4% (15-31) of his career points have come on lamplighters.

    Goal Scorer – Sophomore right wing Blair Riley (Kamloops, British Columbia) has three goals in his first 14 games this campaign after tallying a lamplighter at Michigan State (12/8) to equal his goal-scoring production in 34 games last season.
