Bulldogs Begin First-Round Playoff Series This Weekend Against Western Michigan

For the second time in the last three seasons, Ferris State University will host a first-round series in the 2008 Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Playoffs this weekend (March 7-9) at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

Ferris State, which earned the league tournament's fifth seed, will entertain the 12th-seed Western Michigan Broncos in the best two-of-three series. The Bulldogs claimed sole possession of fifth place in the final CCHA regular-season standings with a 4-3 overtime home league win over nationally top-ranked Michigan in Saturday's (March 1) regular-season finale and finished with a 28-league points total.

The CCHA Playoff series will get underway Friday (March 7) with opening faceoff scheduled for 7:35 p.m. (EST) due to a live FSN Detroit telecast. The puck for Game Two on Saturday (March 8) will drop at 7:05 p.m. (EST) and Sunday's (March 9) game, if necessary, will also begin at 7:05 p.m. (EDT).

Ferris State is presently 15-14-5 overall and finished with a fifth-place 12-12-4 CCHA regular-season record this campaign under 16th-year head coach Bob Daniels. The CCHA placing, other than the 2002-03 CCHA regular-season championship title (45 league points), is the highest since the 1990-91 season when the Bulldogs registered a third-place 35-league point total.

If Ferris State wins its first-round league playoff series, the Bulldogs will then advance to quarterfinal-round play on March 14-16 at the site of one top four-seeded teams (Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Michigan State, or Notre Dame) in another best two-of-three series. The winners will then make a trip to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich., which is the site for the 2008 Championships (March 21-22). The winner of the Mason Cup championship game earns the league's automatic NCAA Tournament bid.

Ferris State hosted a first-round league playoff series in 2006 and the Bulldogs went on to sweep Ohio State in two games of a best two-of-three series in Big Rapids.
