SCOTT WIETECHA CHOSEN CCHA DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK
FSU Skater Recognized For Play In League Series Sweep of Nationally-Ranked Miami
Freshman Scott Wietecha (Wolverine Lake) of the nationally-ranked Ferris State Univerity men's ice hockey team has been chosen as this week's Defenseman of the Week by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) for this performance in last weekend's (Feb. 15-16) league home series sweep of nationally second-ranked Miami (Ohio). The announcement was made Monday (Feb. 18).
Wietecha helped the Bulldogs extend their current unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2) by tallying the game-winning goal in Saturday's (Feb. 16) 3-1 victory over Miami with 3:15 remaining in regulation to earn first star of the game honors. In Friday's (Feb. 15) 6-5 win versus the RedHawks, Wietecha registered the first assist on Ferris State's game-winning goal.
The 6-1, 201-pound defenseman has totaled 10 points with four goals and six assists this season in 27 contests to go with a +12 efficiency rating. Wietecha, who's midst a present three-game point streak (1-2=3), ranks eighth on Ferris State's points leaders and is second among the team's defensemen. Two of his four goals this campaign have been game-winning tallies.
Wietecha skated the last two seasons (2005-06 and 2006-07) for the United States Hockey League's (USHL) Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Roughriders before enrolling at FSU.
The selection of Wietecha represents the fourth time this season in which a Bulldog skater has received weekly league recognition. Most recently, freshman left wing Mike Fillinger (Grand Ledge) was tabbed CCHA Rookie of the Week (Jan. 2). Junior Evan Case (Grosse Pointe Woods) was named the CCHA's Defensive Player of the Week (Dec. 3) while junior Mitch O'Keefe (Almonte, Ontario) was tabbed as the CCHA's Goaltender of the Week (Oct. 29).
Ferris State, which is ranked 19th in the nation this week (Feb. 17) by Inside College Hockey.com, has posted a 13-12-5 overall record with a sixth-place tying 10-10-4 CCHA mark (24 league points) to date this season. The Bulldogs visit the Bowling Green State Falcons this weekend (Feb. 22-23) in a two-game CCHA series at the BGSU Ice Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio. The puck will drop for both contests at 7:05 p.m. (EST).
