After serving as a football and basketball manager, Hicks played two years as a two-way lineman. While at Ferris Institute,
he developed lifelong friendships with such notables as President Vic Spathelf and Coaches Sherman and Karas, and later Coaches
Leach, Coso, Otterbein and Pierce.
Hicks ran successful concrete businesses in Big Rapids, Gaylord and Miami before turning the firm over to his son, Dan, who heads Hicks Industries. A loyal alumnus and generous donor to Bulldog athletics, he was a charter member of the Gridiron Club, member of Solid Ice, Stadium Campaign major donor and Honorary Football Coach in 1982 and 1990-96. He and his wife, Ruth, established a Gridiron Club Endowment and were inducted into the Phoenix Society. He received a Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1984.
