The 2004-05 Ferris State women's golf team inked its name in the school's record book as the Bulldogs fired a 19-over par two-round 595-stroke score to capture their own FSU Bulldog Invitational held at the 5,990-yard, par 72 Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
Ferris State, which started out tourney play with a school-best 18-hole 296 score in Saturday's (Sept. 4) opening round, registered a 299 in Sunday's (Sept. 5) final-round play. Meanwhile, freshman Yasuyo Kiyota made her collegiate debut an historic one by earning medalist honors in record fashion. Kiyota's first-place 146 (72-74--146, +2)represented a school record for the lowest 36-hole score, bettering 147 (73-74--147) set by Kathryn Bobbie at the 2000 Tri-State Invitational (Oct. 22-23) in Angola, Ind. The previous FSU team best was a third-place 618 (315-303--618) at the Ball State Cardinal Classic (9/7-8/02) in Yorktown, Ind. The Bulldogs, who finished tied for second place at the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament in May, also significantly improved upon last fall's Bulldog Invite ninth-place showing.
The Bulldogs won by 12 strokes over Grand Valley State, which claimed second place with a 607 score (+31). Northern Kentucky turned in a third-place 615 (+39) total proceeded by St. Mary's of Indiana (637, +60) and Southern Indiana (637, +61).
Junior Elena Robles took second-place honors by finishing one stroke behind Kiyota at 147 (74-73--147, +3). Frosh Becky Hoffman also made her initial collegiate performance a memorable one by tallying a 150 score (75-75--150, +6) to place fourth.
Sophomore Casey McKinnon recorded a 155 (78-77--155, +11) as did frosh Missy Ward (75-80--155, +11) for a 12th-place showing. Sophomore Heidi Aittama rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs by placing in a four-way tie for 25th place at 161 (83-78--161, +17).
