FERRIS STATE WOMEN’S GOLF DISTRIBUTES 2004-05 TEAM AWARDS

Elena Robles Selected Most Valuable Player For Second Consecutive Season

The 2004-05 Ferris State University women’s golf team, which turned in its second consecutive top four national finish with a fourth-place showing at the 2005 NCAA Division II National Women’s Golf Championships, has honored junior Elena Robles (Torrance, Calif./Redondo Union) as the squad’s Most Valuable Player while freshman and 2004-05 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Freshman of the Year Becky Hoffman (Gaines/Swartz Creek) was chosen as the recipient of the Bulldog Award as announced by 2004-05 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division II National Coach of the Year Brad Bedortha.

Junior Elena Robles was named Ferris' Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year after averaging a school-record 78.03 stroke average this season.

Robles, a 2004-05 NGCA All-America Second-Team selection, was honored as Bulldogs’ Most Valuable Player for the second season in a row as she posted a school single-season record 78.03 strokes average (2,341 total strokes) in 30 rounds of competition. Robles attained first-team All-GLIAC accolades (2002-03 and 2004-05) for the second time in her career this season and led Ferris at the GLIAC Championships (April 29) with a second-place 149-stroke total. She recorded a team-leading third-place tying 238 score at the 2005 NCAA-II East Regional (May 2-3) and then carded a four-round 312 score to place 14th overall at the sixth annual NCAA-II National Championships (May 11-14) in Albuquerque, N.M. Robles tallied a team-best 11 top-20 tournament finishes this campaign, including seven among the top five. She garnered top individual medalist honors at the Northwood Invitational (Oct. 1-2) with a first-place 152 two-round stroke total. Robles turned in a team-best 80.77 stroke average (2,100 total strokes) in 26 rounds for the 2003-04 season en route to being named to the All-GLIAC Second Team. Robles, the 2002-03 GLIAC Freshman of the Year, presently ranks third on the Bulldogs’ all-time stroke average leaders chart with a 79.70 career average (6,695 total strokes) in 84 rounds.

Becky Hoffman, the 2005 GLIAC Freshman of the Year, was Ferris' top golfer at this year's NCAA Division II National Championships with a ninth-place finish.

Hoffman, a 2004-05 NGCA All-America Honorable Mention honoree, was the winner of the Bulldog Award which is presented annually to a FSU women’s golf team member who displays the most dedication and hard work. An All-GLIAC First-Team pick this season, Hoffman averaged 79.10 strokes (2,373 total strokes) in 30 rounds of play. She notched six top-10 finishes for the 2004-05 campaign and placed in the top five on four occasions. Hoffman, who became the third straight Bulldog golfer to receive GLIAC Freshman of the Year kudos (Elena Robles in 2002-03 and Casey McKinnon in 2003-04), shot a squad-best ninth-place 305 four-round score at the 2005 national championship tournament. She was Ferris’ top performer at the Grand Valley State Laker Classic (Sept. 6-7) with a second-place tying two-round 154 score and also claimed top squad honors at the Indiana Invitational (Apr. 2-3) with a 161 two-round stroke total to tie for 27th place.

Ferris State made its second straight national championship appearance and the program’s fifth ever a memorable one as the Bulldogs fired a four-round 1,251 score (+83) at the 2005 NCAA-II National Women’s Golf Championships, which were conducted at University of New Mexico Championship Course. The previous year, Ferris registered the highest-placing ever in the school’s women’s athletics history with a second-place tying 1,264 four-round stroke total (+112) at The Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes in Longwood, Fla.
