FSU PLACES SECOND AT GLIAC CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR
Casey McKinnon Finishes Second To Lead Bulldogs
The Ferris State women's golf team placed second overall in the 2004 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Golf Championships Sunday (April 18) as the Bulldogs carded a second-round score of 332 and finished the two-day event with a 652 total on the par 72, 5,989-yard FSU Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
FSU, which fired a 320 in Saturday's (April 17) opening round, was 19 strokes behind rival Grand Valley State. The Lakers shot a 317 in Sunday's final 18 holes of action to conclude at 633 overall. Northwood was third (691) and Mercyhurst fourth (713) in the seven-team field.
GVSU's Melissa Sneller captured individual medalist honors with a 148 (74-74) while Bulldog sophomore Casey McKinnon placed second with a 158 (77-81). Sophomore Elena Robles finished tied for sixth overall with a 166 (88-77) score. Senior Ellie Saladin carded a 166 (81-85) and was eighth while freshman Sam Wideman tied for 14th place (83-91--174) and junior Meredith Johnson tied for 26th place (92-89--181). Freshman Heidi Aittama compiled a 79 on Saturday before withdrawing from Sunday's round.
Freshman Kelly Wilkinson and junior Rachael Peterson competed as non-scoring individuals and were 10th and tied for 11th, respectively, in the field. Wilkinson shot a 172 (88-84) and Peterson posted a 173 (85-88) on the par 72 course. Freshman Ashley Wolfe recorded a 174 (85-89) as an individual, which was good enough to rank tied for 14th on the final leader board.
The Lakers and Bulldogs have been the league's top two finishers in each of the four women's golf championships since the event began in 2001. GVSU won its second consecutive and third overall title this year. The Lakers won the inaugural event in 2001 before FSU claimed the 2002 crown.
Ferris State turned in a second-place showing at the 2003 GLIAC Championships with a two-round 626 score (310-316--626, +50) on the Riverside Golf Club course in Cambridge Springs, Pa.
