NCAA WOMEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP REGIONALS ANNOUNCED

Ferris State Earns A Bid And Will Compete In The East Regional

The NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Committee has announced the teams and individuals selected to participate in the 2003 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship Regionals.

The four (East, West, North and South) regional tournaments will be held from May 6-7 to determine the championships field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of the NCAA championships competition, and all national championships policies will apply. Each regional will consist of both teams and individual competition conducted concurrently. All participants will compete throughout the 56 holes of competition. The top two teams along with the top two individuals not with a team, from each regional, will advance to the championships.

In order to be considered for selection to the national championships, teams and individuals must have played a minimum of 15 18-hole rounds including a minimum of four rounds in the spring.

Senior Kathryn Bobbie will lead the nationally-ranked Bulldogs into NCAA East Regional competition.

Ferris State is one of six teams competing in the East Regional, which will be held at the Findlay (Ohio) Country Club with the University of Findlay hosting the event. The Bulldogs are seeded No. 2 behind Grand Valley State. The rest of the East Region field is comprised of Longwood (Va.), Northern Kentucky, Indianapolis and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The top six teams in each region that met specific NCAA criteria along with the top three individuals not with a team were selected for regional competition. The North Regional, which is being hosted by Southwest State University, is taking place at the Marshall (Minn.) Golf Club while the Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla., is the site for the South Regional. Florida Southern College is serving as the South Region host. The West Regional will be held at the Muskogee (Okla.) Country Club with Northeastern State University hosting.

The Bulldogs, under fourth-year head coach Brad Bedortha, placed third of six teams at the 2002 NCAA-II East Regional with a 36-hole 648 score at the Perry Park (Ky.) Golf Course. As a result, senior Kathryn Bobbie (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) was the lone FSU representative at the 2002 NCAA-II Championships in Allendale, Mich., where she finished tied for eighth place with a 321 score for 72 holes.

The 2003 NCAA-II Women’s Golf Championships will be held May 14-17 at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., and will be hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission and Sunshine State Conference. The championships will consist of both team and individual competition. All participants will compete throughout the entire 72 holes of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each day’s total score. The number of participants allowed at the finals is 48.

Ferris State’s most recent NCAA-II Championship appearance as a team was in 2001 (May 16-19) as the Bulldogs were fifth of eight participating teams with a four-round 1,360 score at the Rock Hill (S.C.) Golf Club.
