FSU'S BECKY HOFFMAN EARNS GLIAC WEEKLY HONOR
Senior Honored After Earning League Individual Medalist Laurels
Senior Becky Hoffman (Gaines/Swartz Creek) of the 2007-08 Ferris State University women's golf team has been honored as this week's (April 23) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Golf Athlete of the Week after her outstanding performance in this past weekend's (April 20-21) GLIAC Championships at Arlington, Ohio.
This week's recognition represents the second time Hoffman has claimed the league weekly honor this spring as she was previously honored earlier this month (April 1).
Hoffman led the nationally-ranked Bulldogs to a runner-up team finish in the GLIAC Championships on Sunday and Monday. The 5-4 Hoffman was the tournament's top individual medalist as she bested Grand Valley State’s Ashley Smith by carding a birdie in the first playoff hole. Hoffman carded a 226 (74-75-77=226, +10) in the three rounds of competition prior to the playoff on the par 72, 5,851-yard Sycamore Springs Golf Course. The victory represented Hoffman's third top-five tournament finish and eighth top 10 placing in events this campaign.
The senior from Swartz Creek High School is one two Bulldog players to receive the league's weekly honor this campaign as freshman Jacqueline Benscoter (Metamorra/Lapeer West) previously won this season's initial award (Sept. 5).
For the 2007-08 season, Hoffman has compiled a team-leading 77.40 stroke average (1,935 total strokes) in 25 rounds. She has recorded a team-best nine top-20 place finishes, which includes placing among the top five individuals on three occasions - third at the Olivet Invitational (Sept. 21-22) and tying for fifth at the Findlay William "Bing" Beall Classic (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) prior to winning the GLIAC Championship.
Hoffman has produced 39 career top-20 finishes to date with 19 of those being in the top five.
Hoffman and the Bulldogs will next compete in the NCAA Division II East Regional Championships May 5-7 at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.
