GLIAC SELECTS MEYER AS WOMEN'S GOLF ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Sophomore Plays Key Role In Bulldogs Winning Two Spring Tourney Titles
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has selected Ferris State University sophomore Alison Meyer (Duluth, Minn./Central) as the GLIAC Women's Golf Athlete of the Week after she posted top-five finishes in two of the team's three spring tournaments to date. The announcement made Tuesday (April 3) by the conference office.
Meyer has helped lead nationally fourth-ranked Ferris State to a pair of tournament titles this spring as the Bulldogs have taken first place at the Lenoir-Rhyne Lady Bear Invitational (March 12-13) and at the Ashland Invitational (March 31-April 1).
Meyer registered the highest placing in her collegiate career at the Lenoir-Rhyne Lady Bear Invitational with a second-place 152 score (76-76=152). She then followed that notable performance with a 17th-place tying finish at the Northern Kentucky Invitational (March 24-25) after firing a two-round 155 stroke total (80-75=155). She recently earned a share of second place at the Ashland Invitational by shooting a 152 score (77-75==152) after being eliminated for top individual medalist honors in a playoff.
In this spring's three tournaments, Meyer has notched a 76.50 stroke average (459 total strokes) in six rounds.
For the 2006-07 season, Meyer is second on the team with a 78.50 stroke average (1.413 total strokes) in 18 rounds. She has a team-high tying eight top-20 finishes, which includes four efforts in the top 10.
Meyer has compiled a current 80.39 career average (2,894 total strokes) in 36 rounds of play. She totaled an 82.28 average (1,481 total strokes) in 18 rounds for the 2005-06 campaign.
Ferris State now has three different golfers on its current roster who have won the conference award this season. Junior Missy Ward (Fenton/Linden) was the first to receive the league honor (Sept. 7) and was joined by senior Casey McKinnon (St. Ignace/LaSalle), who achieved the recognition the following month (Oct. 4).
The Bulldogs have finished no lower than second place in all but one of their nine tournaments this season and will attempt to capture their fifth tournament championship this weekend (April 6-7) at the Illinois Illini Classic in Urbana, Ill.
