The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) has chosen juniors Chris Griffin (Shelby) and Mitch Flemming (St. Clair Shores/
Lakeview)
both current members of the Ferris State University men’s golf team as Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for the 2001-02 season as announced recently at the annual GCAA Division II National Awards Dinner held at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Both Griffin and Flemming were among 40 individuals named All-America Scholars by the GCAA, which is the professional association of collegiate men's golf coaches. Established in 1958, this non-profit organization is dedicated to educating, promoting, and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes who participate in collegiate golf at all levels. Through its established events and programs, the GCAA maintains a goal of increasing awareness and the status of men's collegiate golf. To be eligible for All-America Scholar recognition, the nominated student-athlete must have an overall certified minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0, be a junior or senior academically, be of high moral character and in good standing at their respective institution and have a stroke average for the season in which nominated under 80.0 while competing in 70% of the nominating institution’s competitive rounds.

The 2001-02 PING All-Region Teams were also announced and Mitch Flemming was one of eight golfers named to the Great Lakes Region squad. Flemming posted a team-best 74.1 stroke average (1,927 total strokes) in 26 rounds this season and registered top tournament individual medalist honors on three occasions – NCAA-II District IV Tourney I (Sept. 23-24), NCAA-II District IV Tourney II (March 23-24) and Findlay-Alltel Invitational (April 6-7). He paced the Bulldogs at the NCAA-II Great Lakes/Central Super Regional with a second-place tying 69-stroke total. Third-year FSU head coach Brad Bedortha was chosen as the Great Lakes Region’s Coach-of-the-Year.

Chris Griffin concluded the season with a 76.5 stroke average (1,606 total strokes) in 21 rounds. He owned the distinction of being the Bulldogs’ top finisher (18th-place tie) at the 2002 NCAA Division II National Championships (May 21-24) as a result of carding a four-round 299 score. Like Flemming, Griffin is a marketing/professional golf management major.

Ferris State recently made its 10th NCAA-II Championship appearance in the program’s history and placed 13th in the 18-team field with a four-round 1,238-stroke total at the 40th annual NCAA-II Championships in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The Bulldogs claimed their 17th Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship title earlier this season (Oct. 5-6) with a first-place showing at the conference tournament in Ashland, Ohio.
