THREE FERRIS STATE MEN'S GOLFERS RECEIVE ALL-GLIAC HONORS
Senior Pat Simmer Earns League First-Team Accolades*2003-04 GLIAC All-Conference Release* PDF
The Ferris State University men's golf team placed three of its members on the 2004 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Golf Team as announced Wednesday (May 12) by the conference office.
Headlining the list is senior Pat Simmer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin Derham Hall), who was the Bulldogs' only first-team representative. Senior Everett Leonard (Kalamazoo/Hackett) attained second-team kudos while freshman Jeff Carlson (Holland/West Ottawa) garnered honorable mention laurels.
Grand Valley State's Kevin Kremer was named the GLIAC's Player of the Year while Ryan Johnson of Wayne State received Freshman of the Year honors. Head coach Mike Horn of Wayne State was the GLIAC Coach of the Year. The All-GLIAC squads, which were comprised of a first, second and honorable mention teams, were selected based upon a player's stroke average in his 10 best conference play rounds, including the GLIAC Championship Tournament's three rounds. Simmer finished third among FSU's leaders this season with a career-best tying 76.39 average (1,757 strokes in 23 rounds). He recorded four top five-place tourney finishes this campaign, including a first-place 144 score (71-73--144) at the Bay Valley Intercollegiate Tournament (Sept. 26-27) in Bay City, Mich. Simmer also turned in a second-place tying 142-stroke total (71-71--142) at the Ferris State Invitational (Sept. 12-13) and carded a 227 (76-76-75--227) at the GLIAC Championships (Oct. 6-7) in Erie, Pa., to claim a tie for 19th place. For his career, Simmer posted a 76.51 career average (4,820 strokes) in 63 rounds. A 2002-03 PING All-Great Lakes Region selection, Simmer won or shared top individual medalist honors twice in his career.
Leonard attained all-league recognition for the first time in his career after compiling a career single-season best 76.30 average (1,526 strokes) in 20 rounds this season to rank second on the squad. He totaled seven top-20 finishes, which includes three top-five placings. Leonard's best finish this season was a tie for second place at the GLIAC Championships as a result of shooting a 217 score (72-72-73--217). Leonard's 217 total at the league tourney represented the seventh-best 54-hole total in Ferris State history. He closed out his two-year Bulldog career with a 76.50 average (1,683 strokes) for 22 rounds.
Carlson averaged 76.84 (1,921 strokes) for 25 rounds to place sixth among the team's top stroke average leaders in his initial collegiate campaign. Carlson racked up six top-20 individual placings, including five top-10 performances. His best outing was a second-place tying 147 score (73-74--147) at the Findlay (Ohio) Oiler Invitational (April 9-10). Carlson fired a three-round 228 (75-75-78--225) at the GLIAC Championships and paced the Bulldogs with a seventh-place 225 (78-72-75--225) at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Super Regional (May 3-5) in Union, Ky.
Ferris State concluded its 2003-04 season at the NCAA-II Great Lakes Super Regional following a fifth-place 927 three-round score.
