NCAA MEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP SUPER REGIONALS ANNOUNCED

Ferris State To Compete In The Great Lakes Regional

The 2002-03 Ferris State University men’s golf team will be competing in the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship Super Regional as announced by the the NCAA-II Men’s Golf Committee.

A total of 80 teams and 46 individuals have been selected to participate in the NCAA-II Super Regionals, which will be conducted May 5-7. The five Super Regional tournaments encompass the current 10 regions of which Ferris State will be participating in the Great Lakes Regional. Mitch Flemming
Senior Mitch Flemming has compiled a team-best 75.4 stroke average while recording six top 10 individual tournament finishes this season.
Both the Great Lakes Regional and the Central Regional are being hosted by Southwest Baptist University (Mo.) and will be held May 5-7 at the Silo Ridge Country Club in Bolivar, Mo.

Ferris State, which is seeded fifth in the Great Lakes Regional and is ranked fourth in the latest (April 23) NCAA-II Men’s Golf Great Lakes Region poll, is joined by Grand Valley State, Bellarmine (Ky.), Lewis, Northwood, Findlay, Northern Kentucky and Indianapolis. Both Lewis and Northwood received automatic qualifiers as a result of capturing the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship titles, respectively. Additionally, five individuals from non-qualifying teams will also be included in the competition.

Ten teams and 10 individuals will advance from the Super Regionals to the 2003 NCAA-II Men’s Golf Championship finals May 20-23 at the Sunriver Resort's Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Ore. The championship finals will be hosted by California State University, Chico. Eight at-large teams and two at-large individuals will be selected Friday, May 9, for the championship finals. The championships will consist of both team and individual competition. All participants will compete throughout the entire 72 holes of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each day’s total score.

Ferris State, under fourth-year head coach Brad Bedortha, placed second of eight participating teams at last season’s Great Lakes/Central Super Regional with an 18-hole 287 score. The regional tourney, which was conducted at the Lassing Pointe Golf Club in Union Ky., featured only a single round as wet weather conditions forced the cancellation of the remaining two rounds. FSU went on to compete in the 40th annual NCAA-II Championships (May 21-24) at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., where the Bulldogs finished 13th in the 18-team field with a four-round 1,238-stroke total.
