Dr. Mark Kosciuszko, a professor at the Michigan College of Optometry and the Faculty Athletics Representative at Ferris State University, has been named the 2003 recipient of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) Tom Donahue Service Award.
The Donahue Service Award is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the GLIAC and intercollegiate athletics. The Donahue Service Award winners have exemplified a high standard of dedication to the GLIAC and its student-athletes set by Tom Donahue, former commissioner of the GLIAC. Kosciuzsko will be presented with the award at the GLIAC Executive Council Meeting, which will be conducted May 19-20 at Northwood University in Midland, Mich.
Kosciuszko has served as FSU's Faculty Athletics Representative since 1988. In that time, he has not only served on the GLIAC Executive Committee, but has also been involved with serving on several NCAA committees. Kosciuszko currently serves as a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's (CCHA) Executive Council and chairs the GLIAC Awards Committee, a position he has held for several years.
"It's fitting the Executive Council present the Donahue Service Award to Mark," stated GLIAC Commissioner Tom Brown. "He has devoted nearly 15 years to serving Ferris State University and the GLIAC as a faculty athletics representative. His work as a Chairperson of the GLIAC Awards Committee has resulted in a great increase in the quantity and quality of the awards presented to our student-athletes."
Kosciuszko, who became the 15th recipient of the Donahue Award, is married to current Hillsdale Women's Basketball Head Coach Claudette Charney and will be leaving Ferris State this summer to enter into private practice at Hillsdale, Mich.
A graduate of Alma (Mich.) College and the Michigan College of Optometry (MCO) at Ferris State, Kosciuszko presently serves as Chief of the Pediatric and Binocular Vision Service at MCO. Along with his teaching and clinical work, Kosciuszko has lectured nationally and internationally. Besides being FSU's Faculty Athletics Representative since 1987, Kosciuszko has served both as a member and chairperson of the University's Athletics Advisory Council.
