DEMARTIN AND FUDGE TABBED 2003-04 "BULLDOGS OF THE YEAR"
Women’s Basketball All-Time Leading Scorer And Football’s Second-Leading Career Rusher Claim Top FSU Athlete Awards
Lucy DeMartin (Mason) and Derek Fudge (Gibonston, Fla./East Bay), a pair of 2003-04 Ferris State University senior student-athletes, have been named the 2003-04 “Bulldogs of the Year” as selected by a FSU Athletics Department committee.
DeMartin, a standout four-year (2000-04) performer on the Bulldogs’ women’s basketball team, closed out an illustrious career as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,721 career points. She attained both Daktronics Division II Women’s Basketball Honorable Mention All-America Team honors and Division II Women’s Basketball Bulletin Honorable Mention All-America Team kudos for the 2003-04 season.
Fudge also turned in a highly-productive four-year (2000-04) football career as evidenced by rushing for 4,024 career yards on 885 attempts and finishing 166 yards shy of being Ferris State’s all-time leading rusher. He achieved honorable mention D2Football.com All-Northeast Region accolades and was an All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First Teamer in 2003.
The Bulldog of the Year Award, which was reinstated in the 2002-03 season following a seven-year absence, is presented annually to the most outstanding Ferris State male and female student-athlete. Award criteria consists of strong athletic achievements (must be a letterwinner and achieve outstanding athletic accomplishment), strong individual character and academic achievement.  | | Lucy DeMartin, who received All-America recognition both athletically and academically in the 2003-04 season, is Ferris State women's basketball's all-time leading scorer.

DeMartin, who also garnered first-team Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region plaudits and was a repeat selection to the GLIAC's North Division First Team in 2003-04, not only concluded her career as the school's all-time scoring leader but also tallied a school single-season record 567 points in her senior year. A first-team 2003-04 Verizon Academic College Division All-American, DeMartin also earned Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Great Lakes Region First-Team laurels. Furthermore, the 5-9 guard was among 40 national finalists for the NCAA Division II Kodak/WBCA All-America Team. She was a co-recipient of the 2003-04 team’s Most Valuable Player Award after claiming the team award in 2002-03 with a school single-season record 20.2 points per game scoring average as a junior. A 2002-03 Daktronics NCAA-II All-Great Lakes Region First-Team selection, DeMartin was previously named to the 2003-04 Division II Women’s Basketball Bulletin Preseason Super 16 All-America Team and was chosen as the publication’s preseason GLIAC Player of the Year. A three-time (2001-04) GLIAC All-Academic pick, DeMartin was twice (2001-02 and 2003-04) honored with the FSU President’s Academic Award for having the team’s highest cumulative grade point average and also was a three-time (2001-04) FSU Dean’s Academic Award honoree.
DeMartin, who was FSU's leading scorer (18.3 ppg) for the 2003-04 season, concluded her career as Ferris’ all-time leader with 402 made free throws and is listed among the program's career top 10 performers in field goals (605), steals (198), assists (356), rebounds (415), blocked shots (35), three-point field goals (109), three-point field goal percentage (.344) and free throw percentage (.778). The team co-captain helped lead Ferris State to its second-ever NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance in 2003-04 as the Bulldogs compiled a 21-10 overall record and placed second at the postseason GLIAC Tournament.  | | Derek Fudge, a three-time all-conference honoree, closed out his four-year career as FSU's second-leading career rusher.

Fudge also turned in his most productive campaign during his final collegiate season with a career-best 1,232 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on 260 carries in 11 2003 season contests. His season-yard total in the fall signified the sixth-highest single-season rushing output in Ferris State history and ranked second among the GLIAC’s top rushers. The 2003 FSU Most Valuable Offensive Skill Player Award winner tallied a career-high 90 points in 2003 which tied for the seventh-best total in FSU all-time annals. The 2000 GLIAC Freshman of the Year and two-time (2000 and 2002) second-team all-league back concluded his career with 4,024 career rushing yards on 885 attempts and was 166 yards shy of becoming Ferris’ all-time leading rusher. The 5-9, 191-pound Fudge, who surpassed the 1,000-yard season rushing mark three times in his career, placed 22nd nationally in rushing (112.0 avg.) and 33rd in scoring (8.2 avg.). He was named both the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week (9/8) and Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette’s tri-Offensive Player of the Week (9/7) after running for a career-high 276 yards and two TD’s in the ‘03 season opener at Hillsdale (9/6).
Along with his 4,024 career rushing yards, Fudge totaled 34 career rushing TD’s in 41 games to go along with 110 pass receptions for 799 yards and three TD’s. He placed sixth among the school’s all-time bests in scoring with a career 222-point total while finishing fourth in all-purpose yards (5,046 yds.) and seventh in total offense (4,059 yds.). Fudge’s 1,232 yards rushing in 2003 and 1,227 in 2000 currently rank sixth and seventh, respectively, on the Bulldogs’ single-season leaders charts.
