MATT MCCOY TO SHOWCASE TALENTS IN GRIDIRON ALL-STAR GAME
Ferris State Lineman To Play In This Saturday’s Las Vegas All-American Classic
Senior offensive tackle Matt McCoy (Charlotte), a member of the 2003 Ferris State University football team, will take part in the Las Vegas All-American Classic to be held this Saturday (Jan. 17) in Las Vegas, Nev.
McCoy was previously extended an invitation to compete in The Whataburger Cactus Bowl Division II All-Star Game held January 9 in Kingsville, Texas, but elected to participate in the higher profile Las Vegas All-American Classic. This all-star classic, which was formerly known as the Paradise Bowl and played in St. George, Utah, features 110 of the top college football student-athletes from all four NCAA levels of competition and is billed as “America’s Largest College Football All-Star Game”. | Matt McCoy will be looking to impress National Football League scouts during this Saturday's Las Vegas All-American Classic All-Star Game. |
The contest, which is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. (EST) opening kickoff at the 36,175-seat Sam Boyd Stadium, will be televised live nationwide on College Sports Television (CSTV). The network is available on Adelphia and Insight cable systems, among others, and is also available on DirecTV channel 610.
McCoy is among 58 individuals listed on the East Team roster, which will be coached by Galen Hall. The Ferris State standout joins 10 other offensive linemen on the East Team and is the only representative from the state of Michigan besides the University of Michigan’s right guard Courtney Morgan.
An All-GLIAC Second-Team selection in 2003, McCoy was also honored as the recipient of the Eric Bennett Memorial Award as Ferris State’s Most Valuable Offensive Lineman. A two-year starter at right tackle, the 6-8, 290-pound lineman started all 11 FSU contests this fall and played an integral role in helping the Bulldogs average 348.5 yards a game in total offense. The 2003 team offensive co-captain attained honorable mention all-conference accolades and GLIAC All-Academic Team honors last season. McCoy was also a co-recipient of FSU’s Coaches Award in 2002 and started in nine of 10 outings that campaign after being moved to tackle from tight end as a result of injuries on the offensive line.
As an 11-game starter at tight end in 2001, McCoy totaled eight receptions for 110 yards (13.8 yards per catch) and two touchdowns. His season receiving yardage ranked sixth highest on the squad while his reception total tied for eighth best. As a redshirt freshman in 2000, McCoy received action in all 11 contests at defensive tackle.
Ferris State finished the 2003 campaign at 6-5 overall, which included a 5-5 (fourth-place tie) record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
