BLOG 6: Ferris Women’s Golf Team Will Battle for Championship
By Sandy Gholston
BIG RAPIDS – It is very likely the race for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s golf championship will again boil down to two of the best Division II teams in the nation: Ferris and Grand Valley.
Ferris is ranked ninth in the Golf World/NGCA Division II Coaches’ Poll (March 4) while its chief rival, Grand Valley, is fourth.
Beyond the GLIAC, Ferris will be keeping an eye on the top of the national poll at the powerful southern teams that traditionally dominate the championship. Florida Southern is first in the nation with seven first-place votes and 246 points. Nova Southeastern is second with three first-place votes and 239 points while Rollins ranks third with 219 points. All three teams are from Florida. Interestingly enough, stretching it out to the top seven, two more Florida teams ranked are Lynn (sixth) and Barry (seventh).
First, however, the Bulldogs will focus on doing what it takes to wrest the GLIAC title from the rival Lakers.
Ferris and Grand Valley have split the last eight championships with the Lakers winning the 2008 crown – snapping a string of two straight titles won by the Bulldogs.
