BIG RAPIDS – Ferris State University’s women’s golf team has finished third in its first two tournaments of the season: first, at its own Ferris State Invitational and then at Grand Valley State Laker Classic over the long Labor Day weekend.

New head coach Mike Mignano’s Bulldogs have a team good enough to earn a high national ranking this year as they are fifth in the NCAA Division II Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association Women’s Golf Coaches Preseason Poll (Aug. 27).

Raquel Hansen, a senior, got off to a solid start as she fired a 147 score to finish second on the leaderboard – three strokes out of first. Another senior, Alison Meyer (who won medalist honors back home this summer in the 2008 Minnesota Women’s Golf State Amateur Tournament), was fourth as she shot 149 while Meghan Hunter, another senior, shot 156. Hansen and Meyer were named to the all-tournament team at Ferris.

At GVSU, Meyer finished sixth (152) while Hunter was 11th at 154. Jacqueline Benscoter, a sophomore, shot 157 to finish 18th while freshman Bryce Hetchler also shot 157. Hansen placed 29th with a score of 162. Freshman Erin Fuchik, competing in a non-scoring role, shot 160 and finished 25th.

Ferris is in store for some more tough competition as the team travels to Ann Arbor to take part in the Michigan Wolverine Invitational (Sept. 13-14).
