BLOG 17: GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Volleyball Tournament Recognized by NCAA
By Sandy Gholston
BIG RAPIDS – The GLVC/GLIAC Volleyball Tournament may not have been a big event to the media, but it was to the NCAA.
Gary Brown, the Director of the NCAA News and Champion Magazine, wrote a blog item about the success of the event that featured 39 regional crossover matches between the two rival leagues in Indianapolis. The unique two-day collaborative event between the leagues proved a hit as players and coaches competed, but also assisted in other capacities during the event when they were not playing, according to Brown’s article. He also wrote about the way that rival schools, from within their league, were rooting for each other at times in a show of conference solidarity.
The event was a great happening and it was nice to see all these schools be able to adjust their schedules to accommodate such a special event for Division II volleyball. The tournament is more evidence of the hard work and creativity of so many people in Division II who far too often have to take a media backseat to the high-powered Division I-level action.
It may have taken place at the Division II level, but make no mistake about it – this was a big-time event.
