BIG RAPIDS – Ferris has returning talent in its secondary and that has been on display, at times, this spring.

With defensive backs Chad Wilson, C.J. Lee and Santino Favot returning in the secondary, the Bulldogs expect to bring back some quality experience. From a sheer experience standpoint, that is a nice place to start for Ferris. Emerging young guys like Russell Weatherspoon, who put in some good work at cornerback, and Zach Rosman, a local product who prepped at Morley Stanwood High School, showed some positive flashes of what they could be able to do next season and in seasons to come.

Whether tangling with taller and bigger receivers or battling speedy wide outs, the defensive backs showed they could be strong for the unit in the upcoming season. Having experience at that level of the defense will be important as guys fill in some holes opened up at linebacker and defensive line in the upcoming season.

In Saturday morning’s scrimmage, the defensive backs made some plays at times and got a good test going against a good group of receivers. The receivers definitely tested the secondary as they came up with some long-gaining plays and scored some touchdowns, but the experienced secondary (especially when the guys are playing aggressive and with energy) should prove to be up to the challenge in the fall.

Being tested by good receivers, such as the ones the Bulldogs have right now (guys who were tested in the fall 2008 season), now should help in the fall.
