BIG RAPIDS – In the spring, there are few things coaches like better than good competition for spots on the depth chart.
Competition is what the Bulldogs have at receiver with a large group of guys believing they have opportunities to be among the first string by the end of the spring and for the time when the student-athletes return to campus to begin preseason camp.
“We have a lot of competition at the receiver position and that’s been a big positive for us to see,” Ferris head coach Jeff Pierce said of a large group of guys who have been young in the past, but now have a higher level of experience. “We have a lot of guys in the mix who want to move up the depth chart.”
Returners like Damien Miller, Keenan Bowman, Matt Schuelke, Mike Ryan, Chris Wilson and others are in a battle for spots on the depth chart. Those experienced guys realize the importance of every spring practice and every spring scrimmage as they work to solidify their positions on the depth chart.
In this kind of competition, everything is important: running routes, dropped footballs, big-time catches, blocking and everything else becomes even more important. Coaches are all over the place watching and taking notes as they maintain a fluid depth chart that changes from practice to practice and scrimmage to scrimmage.
