BIG RAPIDS – A sweep would have been nice, but Ferris has to be happy to return to Big Rapids two points richer after its weekend series against Bowling Green State in Ohio.
The two points put Ferris in seventh place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings – one behind sixth-place Nebraska-Omaha and two ahead of eighth-place Northern Michigan. The Bulldogs earned their two points courtesy of a 3-2 victory on Friday, but dropped a 3-1 decision to the Falcons on Saturday night for the split.
Now, however, competition gets even tougher as three of the Bulldogs’ final four games of the regular season will be on the road against teams in the top four of the CCHA standings. First, Ferris has to pack its bags – including all its equipment – and make the long late-season trip to Alaska to take on the Nanooks in a big two-game series. Currently, Alaska is fourth in the CCHA with 30 points and four of those came at the expense of the Bulldogs during a series earlier in the season in Big Rapids.
So, Ferris can exact a little revenge, possibly move up in the league standings and grab maybe two signature CCHA wins against the Nanooks. In other words: There will be plenty to play for in this two-game set.
