BLOG 29: Bulldogs add a pair of hockey skaters

By Sandy Gholston

FSU Hockey BIG RAPIDS – Recruiting student-athletes is a big investment; it is a particularly significant investment at the NCAA Division I level.

The Ferris State University ice hockey team was able to breathe a little bit of a sigh of relief as it has signed a pair of players it focused on to bring in: 6-foot-2 right winger Eric Alexander, of Kentwood, and 5-foot-8 center/right winger Travis Ouellette of Tecumseh, Ontario. Alexander is playing for the Chicago Steele of the United States Hockey League while Ouellette competed for Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League.

“They are two different kinds of forwards,” Ferris head coach Bob Daniels said. “Ouellette is the traditional kind of smaller, but highly-skilled forwards the Bulldogs have successfully recruited in recent seasons. Alexander, on the other hand, gives Ferris something they cover: a strong forward who plays physical and has good size.”

The Bulldogs needed to become stronger and more physical at the forward positions and Alexander is a big help in that respect. On the other hand, speed and skill has been the keys to Ferris’ success over the years. Clearly, Ouellette fits that mold.
