BIG RAPIDS – As things stand currently, Ferris State knows the Central Collegiate Hockey Association championship race is going to be a tough one from start to finish.

All you have to do is ask any of the Bulldog coaches about a CCHA opponent and they will all tell you pretty much the same thing: Every league team is good. So, since points in the league are at a premium, Ferris knew it needed a win against Lake Superior State, on Saturday, after falling in Friday’s contest in Ewigleben Ice Arena. That is precisely what the Bulldogs got thanks to a 4-3 victory over the Lakers.

Ferris enjoyed a much-needed bounce-back effort as it grabbed a lead and held off Lake Superior much to the delight of home fans in Big Rapids. Competing on home ice, the Bulldogs knew it was critical they come away with points against Lake State as road victories are tough to come by through the rigors of CCHA competition.

The good news is Ferris has toughened its defense up the last two weekends (against Western Michigan and Lake Superior) and that could bode well as more tough competition awaits the Bulldogs in the weeks and months to come. Ferris’ stronger defense has been a very positive adjustment, but now the Bulldogs have to work on becoming more effective offensively, particularly on the power play.
