BLOG 17: Ferris has to close the door, defensively
By Sandy Gholston
BIG RAPIDS – Sure, Ferris is off to a 1-2-1 start after a pair of non-conference series against Canisius and Robert Morris. But, it’s just that – a start.
Maybe the biggest concern is less about wins, losses and ties and more about the high number of goals the team has surrendered at this early stage of the season. Ferris gave up five in its opener, three the next night, six goals in its third game and four more in game four.
The Bulldogs are very young between the pipes (with sophomore Pat Nagle and freshman Taylor Nelson) and to some degree on the blueline, defensively. But, it’s more than reasonable to expect those young guys – both extremely talented – to steadily gain confidence and experience as time continues.
Ferris usually gets up for the Broncos (and vice versa) and the fact that the rivalry promises to be a factor should lead the Bulldogs to tighten some things up on defense and come out flying all over the ice against Western.
As we know, the season is a long grind. But, playing Western is always reason to be fired up.
