BIG RAPIDS – Students were encouraged and welcomed, free of charge to the “Dawg Pound.” The students came out in force to support the Ferris ice hockey team in its home regular-season opener on Friday afternoon against Canisius in Ewigleben Ice Arena.

Even though the Bulldogs suffered a 5-2 setback to the Griffs, it was fantastic to see the student section packed (and then some) as the student section wrapped around the southwest corner of Ewigleben – beyond even the normal established bounds of the student section. Students stood and cheered loudly most of the night even though the result was not a win.

“That is one of the reasons it was so disappointing we lost (the first game of the series before the Bulldogs bounced back on Saturday to salvage a split with a 5-2 win in the two-game finale),” Ferris head coach Bob Daniels said in his post-game press conference on Friday. “We wanted to do everything we could to put on a good show for the fans to bring them back and I think they will come back.”

The students created a loud and tough atmosphere for the arena, and when you’re down on the ice the students are especially loud. It was a great atmosphere and hopefully the students will be back to show their support for what appears to be a solid ice hockey team we will be sending to the ice in the battle for supremacy in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
