BIG RAPIDS – Senior defensive tackle Jake Visser, of the Ferris State University football team, continues to collect honors in spite of the fact his college football career has come to an end.
Earlier this month, the 6-2 and 275-pound Visser was named a national finalist for the Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award and, more recently, he was named the 2008 Daktronics Super Region Three Defensive Player of the Year. The accolades are nothing new to Visser who has been one of the best-kept secrets in the GLIAC, the region and the nation through much of his brilliant college career at Ferris. Only in the last two seasons has the rest of Division II college football, and even some National Football League scouts, begun to discover.
The honors are well deserved for Visser, a native of Coopersville, who has worked hard and dedicated himself to football and education from the minute he stepped foot on the Ferris campus. Visser is a player who will be sorely missed on that defensive line for the Bulldogs. But, as is the case in college football, teams have to find ways to reload when great players graduate from a program.
