BLOG 23: Congrats to Visser on GLIAC Weekly honor
By Sandy Gholston
BIG RAPIDS – Senior All-American defensive tackle Jake Visser’s strong efforts, in Ferris State’s 25-24 upset win over nationally-ranked Ashland, did not go unnoticed by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Visser, a native of Coopersville, was named the GLIAC’s Defensive Player of the Week. The award came as the result of a performance during which he finished with 12 total tackles (nine solos), one sack, one tackle for a loss and a fumble recovery. It was actually an assist from Visser that opened the hole that allowed senior linebacker Kevin Noe, who earned some preseason All-American recognition in his own right, to block what would have been a game-winning 32-yard field goal attempt by Ashland in the closing seconds of last Saturday’s contest in Ohio.
Visser, with a unique combination of speed, quickness and strength, has been one of the mainstays of that tough defensive line that brings a strong level of experience with him and end Kyle Walker.
Ferris’ defense is a big reason the team is off to a 2-0 start for just the second time in the last three seasons.
