Lucy DeMartin Receives Verizon Academic All-District First-Team Honors
February 26, 2003
 | Ferris' Lucy DeMartin has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District Team |
Ferris State University junior guard Lucy DeMartin (Mason) has been recognized as a 2002-03 Verizon Academic All-District IV College Division Women's Basketball First-Team selection.
An elementary education major, DeMartin joins Lake Superior State's Alice Duesing (forward), Andrea Novak (forward) of Michigan Tech and Hillsdale's Jen Newsone (guard) as the lone representatives from a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member school in voting conducted by the College Sports Information Directors Association of America (CoSIDA). Duesing was also a first-team honoree while Novak received second-team recognition and Newsone garnered third-team accolades.
Student-athletes must have reached at least sophomore status academically, maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and also be a starter or key reserve for their team to be nominated. The District IV team is comprised of colleges and universities located in the states of Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.
A three-time (12/2, 12/16, 2/25) GLIAC North Division Player of the Week this campaign, DeMartin attained second-team all-district kudos in 2001-02. Her first-team showing marks the third consecutive season Ferris has had a first-team pick as former standout Debbie Killips was previously honored twice (2000-02). Killips also attained first-team Verizon Academic All-America accolades last season. As a first-team honoree this campaign, DeMartin will be placed on the national Verizon Academic All-America ballot.
DeMartin, who currently has an active 30-game double-figure scoring streak, presently has 1,125 career points and needs 85 more to tie Jodi Raab (1,210; 1989-93) for eighth place on FSU’s career scoring leaders chart. She ranks eighth (.342; 67-196) among Ferris’ career three-point field goal percentage leaders to date and is one trey shy of tying Carrie Roys (68; 1996-00) for eighth place on the school’s career made three-point field goal list.
DeMartin, who currently ranks fifth (.794; 262-330) on the school’s career free throw percentage chart, presently has 248 career assists and needs 34 more to tie Tanya Potcova (282; 1993-96) for seventh place among FSU’s leaders. She has 131 career steals to date and is 10 short of matching Melissa Smiley’s (141; 1988-91) eighth-place career total. Her current team-leading scoring average (19.8 ppg) ranks first among the school’s all-time junior class leaders and is second in the GLIAC’s overall statistical rankings.
FSU, which is presently 15-10 overall and 10-8 in league action, will battle the Lake Superior State Lakers in the quarterfinal round of the 2002-03 GLIAC Tournament this Saturday (March 1) with tipoff slated for 3 p.m. (EST) at LSSU's Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The Bulldogs, who have won four of their last five games to date, are ranked 10th in the current (Feb. 19) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional rankings.
This year marks the 51st anniversary of the Verizon Academic All-America program, which was founded by CoSIDA in 1952 to recognize collegiate student-athletes for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field. Over the past 50 years, the Verizon Academic All-America program has grown into one of the most recognized and prestigious collegiate scholar-athlete awards nationwide, honoring student-athletes from all NCAA championship sports.
